The Hawk card

The Hawk V9 is a real-time colour video digitiser, which can be used to grab an image from any PAL composite video source; for example, a video recorder, video camera or video stills camera such as the Canon Ion.

The grabbed image can then be converted into a conventional sprite, which can be saved or imported directly into multi-tasking desktop packages such as Impression, Paint, Titler etc.

The MkII combines all the advantages of the original Hawk V9 with exciting new features. Hardware dithering is incorporated to bring TV-like display to the desktop. This has been achieved by exploiting the programmable gate array technology used in Computer Concepts's LaserDirect and ScanLight expansion cards.

Dithering makes it easy to grab exactly the video image you want and it means that grabbing the image is now a simple, one-stage operation. Just point, click, grab. That's it - a workable picture with no further processing needed.

Included with the Hawk V9 is ChangeFSI, a version of the popular desktop image manipulation program. This lets you scale the image, change it to a different mode or enhance it.

You can save the grabbed image either as a conventional 8-bit sprite, suitable for inclusion in a wide variety of applications, or alternatively in a 6-bit monochrome format. This helps to make the most of video-sourced images where the final image is in monochrome, e.g. in DTP, as it provides the ability to print images with up to 64 levels of grey.
