Support - Third Party Software

Disclaimer: please note that ArgoNet have nothing to do with the software listed on this page, and cannot support it in any way.

The software on this page has been linked to by the web page designer simply to help ArgoNet users find useful applications, and has gone through no official vetting process; hence neither Argonet nor the web page designer can offer any guarantee as to the fitness of purpose of this software, or any support should the user get into difficulties.

If you have any problems please contact the program's author(s), not Argonet.

Increasingly a number of third-party "upgrades" and enhancements are appearing, the best of which we will try to include here. Note that ArgoNet cannot offer any support for the new features added by software authors not working for the company, but feel that the work of people such as Robin Abecasis (robina@argonet.co.uk) is of a sufficiently high standard to be given an airing here. Also included are a number of public domain (PD) utilities that may be of interest to ArgoNet users.

If you have a utility that you think will be of interest to ArgoNet users, or think that some killer PD application should have a mention in this section, then please feel free to email the web page designer.

Third Party Software:

Here are a few pieces of software that have been written by other ArgoNet users to compliment the existing software:

InterNews Patches: Robin Abecasis (robina@argonet.co.uk)

Robin has produced a number of patches to the newsgroup reader (nine to date!), which are placed on the part of the FTP site given over to his Renegade BBS archives. If you want to enjoy random taglines, fast RAM-based file sorting, multiple user i.d.s, ROT encoding, or fix things like distribution, full multitasking, organisation fields and text width then his patches are highly recommended. Starting from patch eight any new patches will be given the same name, so you will always find the latest version in the "patches" directory of the Renegade PD part of the ftp site.

Online Call Costers:

There are currently at least three call-costers available for use with the Voyager software. They all do pretty much the same job in the same way - by looking at the Voyager log file and working out how much time you've spent on-line, accounting for minimum charges, different charging rates etc. and then telling you how much all that 'net-surfing is going to cost when the 'phone bill next drops on the doormat. Perhaps it's better if you don't know!

Web Pages:

You might also want to start a collection of useful software to aid you in your attempts at web page creation. Although the ArgoNet web kit comes with a HTML macro inserter and a sprite to GIF convertor capable of handling interlacing and transparencies, we'll try to add a few more programs that might be of interest here. As ever, if you have any suggestions then email the web page designer.

Creator: John Kortink

This little application will allow you to convert standard Risc OS sprites to many different graphics formats, including GIF and JPEG.

HTMacroL: Richard Goodwin (mabel@argonet.co.uk)

This program opens a window of useful HTML commands, which can be redefined by the user for a truly customisable web page. In fact, it was used to help write this very page - not surprising, as I wrote the program too ;-)

General Software

Finally, here are a few more pieces of software that, although not relating directly to Voyager, will nevertheless help make you life on the 'net a little easier.

Figlet: Paul Corke (csc060@cent1.lancs.ac.uk)

If you want a snazzy signature file then this is the utility to have. It will convert the text of your choice into one of many styles, all made up of standard ASCII text characters so that it will be readable on any type of computer. Note though that you will need Acorn's Toolbox modules to run Figlet.

Here's a small example of what Figlet can do:
         _____ __ __
        / __(_)__ _/ /__ / /_
       / _// / _ `/ / -_) __/
      /_/ /_/\_, /_/\__/\__/
            /___/

LongFiles: Jason Tribbeck (jason@argonet.co.uk)

To get around that nasty 10-letter restriction on file names under Risc OS, use this handy PD utility from Jason Tribbeck. It allows you to use up to 55 characters on any Risc OS compliant filing system, very handy when downloading files with very long names!
    longfiles.zip 9 Kbytes Apr 23 1996

UUEncoded File Decoder:

This handy utility can encode and decode files in the UUE format, handle split files and MIME base64 code. Although the Voyager email program handles UUEncoded and MIME files through email, this utility is invaluable if you subscribe to newsgroups where there are regular postings of binary files (at least until the new newsreader software is finished!)
   uucoder.spk 61 Kbytes Mar 7 1996

Sound Sample Player:

A rather useful utility that has been designed not only to play sound samples in a variety of formats but also to play any samples thrown out by the ArcWeb web browser (and so, by extension, the Voyager web browser).
   soundconv160.arc 133 Kbytes Feb 23 1996

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) Program:

This program will allow you to use IRC when your Voyager software is connected to the Internet.
