Happy Easter to all our users!

Easter Support

Email support will be available throughout the Easter break from support@argonet.co.uk as normal. Telephone support will close at 6pm on Thursday 4th April and reopen at 9am on Tuesday 9th April.

All services will be monitored and any major problems fixed (hopefully!). Our ever valiant servant TIMM will still be working over Easter (no rest for him) and any web page uploads should be on-line virtually straight away.

New Web Options

We have revamped the web system slightly to give you a few more options on how to present your pages:

  1. You can now refer to your pages not only as www.argonet.co.uk/users/yourpages but also www.argonet.co.uk/homepages/yourpages, www.argonet.co.uk/business/yourpages or www.argonet.co.uk/education/yourpages. All of these map to exactly the same place so you need make no changes. We did this because some of you may prefer to be considered a 'business' rather than just a 'user'.
  2. We have had requests to move people up our directory tree (e.g. www.argonet.co.uk/yourpages rather than www.argonet.co.uk/users/yourpages). We can do this for an annual charge of £10+VAT. To do this simply email sales@argonet.co.uk and we'll take care of the rest.
  3. Some users have also asked if they can change how their pages are referred to (e.g. they would rather be www.argonet.co.uk/users/coolname rather than www.argonet.co.uk/users/fbloggs). Again we can do this change for an annual charge of £10+VAT. You can even combine it with option 2 to end up as www.argonet.co.uk/whatever-you-like for £20 a year. Again email sales and we'll sort it out.
We hope these new options are useful to those of you who are using us on a more commercial basis or indeed anybody who wants to be a bit more unique.

Web Page Content Guidelines

By allowing you to take space on our server and not vetting your pages before they go on-line we take the risk of all sorts of inappropriate material appearing. You are responsible for the content of your pages and Argo does not in any way endorse or accept any liability for the content of users pages. However, we do generally try and look at all pages that are placed on-line, whether or not they request to go in the listings, and we will email anyone whose pages are considered inappropriate asking them to alter them.

This is obviously a very difficult area to define (as you've probably seen from all the discussion about the latest Telecommunications Bill in the States, which, in our view, will be totally unenforceable). But we do reserve the right to make the final judgement and remove anyone's pages that we have deemed to be inappropriate - although we hope that we never have to take such action. We will be stricter on pages that do appear in the listings because obviously these are the most visible to all visitors to our site (including many children from schools that subscribe to us) so please try and keep the content appropriate - nobody seems to have put up 'The Under Five's Guide to Home Explosives' yet and we hope it stays that way!

New Argo Packs - Information for Existing Subscribers

Argo are just about to release a range of new packs to replace the existing offers. We thought we would let you know about these first so you know our plans.

The packs are now based around the new USR Sportster Vi Modems - these are basically the same as the old Sportster but look different and also come with the ability to handle Voice Mail. Some of you may already have these modems as our last batch from US Robotics was, unexpectedly, of the new type .

We have now started working with US Robotics on producing Voice Mail and Fax software to work with these modems on the Acorn. The new packs we are offering will include this voice mail and fax software as part of the deal once it is available.

The new modems add no new features whatsoever as far as Internet access is concerned - they still operate at either 14.4K or 28.8K and connect in exactly the same way so there is no need to consider an upgrade for Net use.

Having said that, some of you are bound to ask how can I upgrade or lay my hands on the software? Well, here are the options:

  1. If you have one of the new modems (either via ourselves or one you've bought yourself) you will be able to download the software from our ftp site once we announce its general availability - this is expected to be in May.
  2. If you have any other Sportster modem then we can still supply the fax software to you when it is available. Again look out for the announcement of availability in May.
  3. If you have one of the original Sportster modems and simply can't be without the latest version then we can offer you a new version for £155 ex VAT + £6 carriage. This is a very good price compared to the RRP of £199 ex VAT and certainly better than you would be able to buy it at elsewhere. Please note this is an offer we are making and not one supported by US Robotics - there is no official upgrade scheme and you would still own your original modem which you could sell privately. Because of the terms of our distribution agreement with USR these modems can only be sold at this price to you if you have already bought a Sportster from us. You could then download the new software when available as in (1) above. To take up this offer please contact Argo sales on sales@argonet.co.uk or 0500 585 586.
These new packs are available with immediate effect - all Clan members will receive an offer leaflet this week from Acorn and then we start a three-month long offer running in conjunction with Acorn User starting in their May issue (out on around the 18th April).

We hope this advance info is useful to you. We will always try to keep you ahead of public Argo announcements in general.

Regards,
Andrew
