Serial Hardware Connectivity Troubleshooting
POSSIBLE PROBLEMS
You have one or more of the following serial connectivity problems.
- Your modem won't accept a call-back call.
- Your modem won't dial out.
TROUBLESHOOTING RESOLUTION
- Eliminate physical problems.
- Check for loose connections (external modems only).
- Cycle power on your modem (external modems only).
- Use a different phone line.
- Eliminate software problems.
- Make sure that you are using the right PORT and INTERRUPT in NET.CFG. The following section lists the normal (though not exhaustive) list of DOS COMx: ports, hardware interrupts, and I/O ports typically associated with serial devices, such as modems.
- COM1: -- INT 4 -- PORT 3F8
- COM2: -- INT 3 -- PORT 2F8
- COM3: -- INT 4 -- PORT 3E8
- COM4: -- INT 3 -- PORT 2E8
- Watch NESL, NCOMX, and NWREMOTE load; the diagnostic messages displayed by the drivers are informative.
- If you are using a serial mouse, make sure that you are using different COMx: ports, interrupts, and I/O ports.
- Test your modem connection with another modem package. If the other modem package works, use the diagnostic tool SLPMON (Modem Monitor) to identify driver configuration problems.
