TCP/IP Protocol Stack Problem -- PING ip_address fails.
CURRENT SITUATION
- PING 137.65.1.3 returns host not available.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
- Your TCP/IP protocol stack is not loaded.
- The designated host is not up.
- Your IP Router is not correctly routing packets.
- You have physical network problems.
TROUBLESHOOTING RESOLUTION
- Ensure that your TCP/IP Protocol Stack is loaded.
- If the command MEM /C | FIND "TCPIP" produces a line containing TCPIP, go on to step 2. Otherwise, run STARTNET.BAT.
- Ensure that your IP Router (if you have one) is up and running. Otherwise skip to step 3.
- Use the DOS command LSL -S (capital S) to find your active NET.CFG.
- Use the DOS command FIND "ip_router" NET.CFG to find your IP router.
- Use the DOS command PING ip_router -R to verify that your IP router responds.
If your router is up, then the host that you are trying to reach is down, or does not exist.
- Ensure that the IP subnet mask is appropriate for your network segment. Use the DOS command FIND "subnet_mask" NET.CFG to find your IP subnet mask.
- If the mask is appropriate for your network, your router may not be forwarding packets, if the IP address that you are pinging is on a different network segment as your workstation.
- If the mask is not appropriate for your network, contact your network administrator for the correct IP subnet mask.
- If the IP address that you are pinging is on the same network segment as your workstation, you may have physical network problems.
