TCP/IP Protocol Stack Problem -- PING ip_address fails.

CURRENT SITUATION
POSSIBLE CAUSES
TROUBLESHOOTING RESOLUTION
  1. Ensure that your TCP/IP Protocol Stack is loaded.
    • If the command MEM /C | FIND "TCPIP" produces a line containing TCPIP, go on to step 2. Otherwise, run STARTNET.BAT.
  2. Ensure that your IP Router (if you have one) is up and running. Otherwise skip to step 3.
    • Use the DOS command LSL -S (capital S) to find your active NET.CFG.
    • Use the DOS command FIND "ip_router" NET.CFG to find your IP router.
    • Use the DOS command PING ip_router -R to verify that your IP router responds.
If your router is up, then the host that you are trying to reach is down, or does not exist.
  3. Ensure that the IP subnet mask is appropriate for your network segment. Use the DOS command FIND "subnet_mask" NET.CFG to find your IP subnet mask.
    • If the mask is appropriate for your network, your router may not be forwarding packets, if the IP address that you are pinging is on a different network segment as your workstation.
    • If the mask is not appropriate for your network, contact your network administrator for the correct IP subnet mask.
    • If the IP address that you are pinging is on the same network segment as your workstation, you may have physical network problems.
