The capital of Kazakstan,
Akmola, was last week re-named by President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The
president re-named the city Astana, which means æcapitalÆ in Kazak. The
capital was moved from Almaty in the south of the country to Akmola late
last year. The new name will be officially declared at a ceremony in the
newly-named capital on 10 June 1998.
