At AUSTCARE, we believe that in the race to halt the devastating effects of landmines, there is a valuable resource available which is often over-looked. This resource is the people who live in areas affected by landmines.

With patience and care, local people can be taught the skills that they need to work towards making their homeland a safe place once more. With support from technical experts, local staff and community members are able to plan and carry out mine detection, removal, and education programs.

During AUSTCARE's operations in Mozambique with project partner Norwegian People's Aid, the number of ex-patriot staff was eventually three, compared with local staff of more than 500. Members of the local community can also help immeasurably in identifying priority areas for clearance. With cooperation, the entire operation becomes more efficient and effective.
