Re-establishing a normal life at the end of a war is not an easy process. Unemployment is rife, infrastructure and social facilities are limited. Life is very much a struggle for a returning family.

Add to this the prospect of a landmine injury and the stress on an individual and a family becomes tremendous.

Rehabilitation following a landmine injury is a slow and expensive process. For a child still growing, their prosthetic (false limb) will need changing at least once a year. That is, if the child is lucky enough to have a fitted prosthetic.

AUSTCARE's work with victim rehabilitation has been innovative and successful. In Angola, a local prosthesis factory is now established. The factory uses vulcanised rubber found in the area to manufacture comfortable and durable feet and other prosthesis.
