While the ultimate aim of a Mine Action Program is to remove landmines altogether, it is just as important for returning refugees to learn how to live in safety in the presence of landmines.

Women need to know how to safely collect water for their families. Children need to know where it is safe to play. If someone discovers a mine, people in the community need to know who to tell. If a landmine accident occurs people need to know what to do.

In Afghanistan, AUSTCARE worked with partner organisation Handicap International, to train respected members of the local community as Mine Awareness teachers. These leaders then teach their own communities how to live cautiously in the presence of landmines. Stories and drama games help children learn about the dangers of landmines.
