Tribe of the Challenged Ones

A sample of amusing comments about DynamIP (or me...)

On an average day I get maybe 30 to 50 messages related to DynamIP. Roughly 80% are IMHO pure time wasters on my side because they hit on a problem that is well explained either in the Readme.txt file or somewhere on these pages. Nevertheless, I usually try to point those people in the right direction without making a big fuss (after all, we all started out as newbies...). The other 20% are pretty much evenly split between bug reports and "Thank You" messages. Bug reports (especially those that help me identify a previously unreported problem) are very much appreciated. And quite naturally, I'm very happy about your kind words if you like DynamIP. It does not come as a total surprise, however, that I also get a few messages a month from the less fortunate ones. I call those messages "Comments from the Tribe of the Challenged Ones". While some of them are written in such a hurry that they make no sense whatsoever, others are quite elaborate attacks on DynamIP or me and my personal life (well, at least I have one...).

This page is dedicated to this very small minority of people who are proud members of the Tribe of the Challenged Ones. All names are removed to protect the identity of the sender. Should you ever feel like sending me anything like the stuff listed below, please don't waste your time: I don't program for a living (yes, I already have a life and job). If you don't like DynamIP then you should try one of the many competing products...

My Comment That's what I received

Keep on dreamin'...
After 15 years of doing
business your way, maybe
it's time to brush up your
Interpersonal Skills?

Well, I'm glad I don't have
to do business with you.

While I appreciate your concern over my homepage,
simply saying there is no problem on your end, when
there is, is not a very good answer.
I've got 48M of memory, and regardless of memory
load, the page is truncated at 14,336 everytime.
Of course, most people won't run into it because
they upload a quickie page. However, if you happen
to think that because you offer it free that I should
ignore this 'little' problem, you are mistaken.
Either support your software or turn the source
code over so that I may support it
. Having had my
own company since '81, I know a thing or 3 about this
industry. When you've been successful for 15 years in
computers using your approach, then I may begin to
believe in your way of doing things, but not until then.

Just wondering why you
didn't spend 10 minutes
on the DynamIP web pages
(would have saved you
hours...). Oh well, it's
certainly easier to blame
somebody else...

I was wondering if I can make my own template for
DynamIP and it will replace the variables with my
current ip address. Here is what I want to do:
After looking through your discussion group about
dynamip I found a link to someone who was using
this product. I was inspired to do the same. So I
downloaded DynamIP. Now it won't work!!!!!! Please
get this damm program to have a decent Installation
Program and not require the user to search the registry
for
15 hours just to get the thing to work!!!!!!
That shows that
you are a bad programmer. :(

Same guy is back again:

Still hasn't checked the
DynamIP web pages, i.e.
wasted another 5 hours.
No wonder he doesn't
feel that great...

Why don't you just do this: include the goddam Internet
Control Pack files with your software. I'd rather spend
a few minutes more downloading than have to spend 5 hours
searching for internet controls. Also, fix your .ini
file -- it's screwed... it has a bad type reference
somewhere, I don't know what that means though.
P.S. - I went to http://www.microsoft.com/icp and it says
that MS no longer does the Internet Control Pack thing.
It gives a link to the new company that makes them. The
new company charges hundreds of dollars for the MO-FO's.
