Britain establishes direct rule in India
The
British government took over the rule of the East India Company's
substantial possessions in India in 1858 after a major Indian revolt.
Poorly organized and short of weapons, the rebels failed. Alarmed
by the rebellion, however, Britain decided that the East India Company's
rule in India must end. The company's lands in India then came under
direct control of Britain and are now known as British India. Britain
indirectly governs other areas, known as states, through local leaders.
