5. Britain establishes direct rule in India

The British government took over the rule of the East India Company's substantial possessions in India in 1858 after a major Indian revolt. Poorly organized and short of weapons, the rebels failed. Alarmed by the rebellion, however, Britain decided that the East India Company's rule in India must end. The company's lands in India then came under direct control of Britain and are now known as British India. Britain indirectly governs other areas, known as states, through local leaders.
