3. U.S. President Monroe warns Europe against interference in Americas

In 1823, U.S. President James Monroe issued the Monroe Doctrine to warn European powers not to meddle in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere. The doctrine grew out of fears that some of the European powers might try to suppress representative government in the Americas.
