Interrogation grinds into fifth week
Maiden warrior avoids self-incrimination despite clever questioning

As the fifth week of interrogation wore on, Joan of Arc continued to hold her own against the clever questioning of the judges. When asked if she were in God's grace, Joan responded, "If I am not, may God put me there. And if I am, may God keep me there, for I would be the most sorrowful woman in the world if I knew that I was not in the grace of God." The faces of her interrogators registered shock in response to her eloquent and traditional statement of faith.
