Fourth week of interrogation continues
Questioning centers on clothes

Joan of Arc answered a series of questions today regarding her practice of wearing men's clothes. Many people consider it unnatural and a violation of God's law for a woman to wear male attire.

Cauchon: Is it God who commanded you to wear men's clothes?

Joan: The clothes are a minor matter; and I did not take up men's clothes on the advice of this world. I neither put on these clothes nor did I do anything except by the commandment of God and His angels.

The judges are admitted supporters of the English, and analysts have wondered whether Joan would receive a fair trial. Indeed, Cauchon's questioning appeared to some observers to be less about Joan's choice of wardrobe than a sly attempt to trick her into revealing herself as a witch or heretic.
