Updated Vectorworks tutorials from Jonathan Pickup available
Two updated training guides are now available for users of Vectorworks software. The guides, "3D Modeling in Vectorworks, Second Edition and Vectorworks Landmark Tutorial Manual, Second Edition," were both written by experienced Vectorworks user and author Jonathan Pickup. "3D Modeling in Vectorworks, Second Edition" is a guide for users seeking to create 3D forms through the use of extrudes, sweeps, solids, NURBS, loft surfaces, and 3D primitives. After explaining the basic concepts, the manual uses a series of exercises to demonstrate how and when to use the modeling techniques. The guide also includes 62 videos, which provide step-by-step instructions for completing the exercises. Idaho to get its first Apple Store
Apple will to open its first retail store in the U.S. state of Idaho this fall. It will become the 42nd state with such a store. According to ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/db/2010/02/19/another-state-added-to-store-list—idaho/), the new store will be built at the Boise Town Square shopping mall, west of downtown Boise. It may open in September. Apple now has 283 stores in 10 countries. Approximately 100 stores were remodeled during the 2009 calendar year and 10 new stores opened, including one in Louvre in Paris and Upper West Side in New York.

SNAPPS, IBM bring IBM Lotus Quickr, content management products...
SNAPPS (http://www.snapps.com), a long-time IBM Advanced Business Partner and new Apple Development Partner, identified an opportunity for synergy between the enterprise business software giant IBM and the "hip, cool consumer-focused "Apple and has decided to actively link them together. The first offering, SnappFiles, demonstrated by IBM at MacWorld in San Francisco last week, is a free app available on the Apple App Store that delivers secure access to and collaboration on corporate documents stored in IBM Lotus Quickr or Filenet P8 ECM systems. With work underway to support other IBM ECM systems such as IBM Content Manager and Lotus Connections Files next month, SnappFiles is designed to be a single point of entry into corporate document management systems, says Rob Novak, president of SNAPPS. PaperNow designed as a newspaper/magazine platform for the iPad
PaperNow (http://papernow.tumblr.com/) is a new platform for online newspaper and magazines. Targeted at Apple's upcoming iPad, it's designed to make newspapers and magazines uniquely interactive. "Many were expecting the iPad to be a revolutionary device. And it is," the PaperNow developers write. "For books, movies, games, music, apps… and so on. The expectation that Apple would come up with a solution for newspapers and magazines to monetize on their content, however, was not met." They plan to change that. With the PaperNow app for the iPad -- due in June -- you'll purportedly be able to read newspapers and magazines on the iPad -- and have 'em update in real time. Pricing hasn't been announced.

Apple cuts Final Cut Pro staff
Apple has cut some staff working on its Final Cut video editing software suite, according to a report by a video industry insider. "Apple laid off 40 of my old Final Cut team yesterday, lots of good people, despite high profits," said Pete Warden, a data-mining former Apple employee, in a tweet (http://twitter.com/petewarden/status/9014940274). He says that this is despite high profits, and that Apple "can be pretty evil." The four recipients of the fifth annual Jim Henson Honors were announced today by Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company (http://www.henson.com). Apple adds new countries to the Apple App Store
Apple has expanded its Apple App Store (http://www.itunes.com/appstore). Developers can now distribute their apps to more customers. Apple has added App Store support in Armenia, Botswana, Bulgaria, Jordan, Kenya, Macedonia, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Niger, Senegal, Tunisia, and Uganda. Developers can log in to iTunes Connect (https://itunesconnect.apple.com/WebObjects/iTunesConnect.woa) to view and update the countries where their applications are available.

Sound Byte for Mac OS X adds option to randomly play carts

HP unveils digital cameras, camcorders with Touch Technology
HP (http://www.hp.com) has introduced five point-and-shoot digital cameras and three camcorders with features such as LCD displays, up to 5X optical zoom and fashionable colors. The cameras and camcorders -- due this spring -- come in slim, lightweight designs at prices ranging from US$99 to $199. Adding to its portfolio of touch-enabled notebooks and desktops, HP now features LCD touchscreen displays on select cameras and camcorders. In addition, select models feature a new user interface that include a high color contrast to help ensure better visibility of menus and a choice of more than 25 scene modes. Apple adds ability to browse iPhone/iPod touch app categories to...
Earlier this month Apple added the ability to preview iPhone/iPod touch apps via iTunes Preview. Now it's added the ability to browse application categories. Last November Apple launched iTunes Preview, a web site that gives customers the option to view content without launching the application. Now Apple lets you preview iPhone apps in your browser, as well. Links to an iTunes Preview page can be obtained through the iTunes Store "Copy Link" feature. The page allows browsing of artists and albums. Artist biographies and similar acts can be viewed, as well as details on song prices and individual track lengths. iTunes Preview also offers album reviews and customer reviews. When iTunes Previews launched, you couldn't listen to a sample of music tracks from your browser. However, Apple added that feature earlier this year. Today Apple added the ability to view information on software within the Apple App Store without launching iTunes.

Kingston Digital ships 256GB USB Flash drive
Kingston Digital (http://www.kingston.com), the Flash memory affiliate of Kingston Technology Company, has released the DataTraveler 310, which it says is the first 256GB USB Flash drive in the United States. The company has also released a SDHC Class 10 card in 16GB and 32GB capacities. The DataTraveler 310 replaces the 256GB DataTraveler 300, released in July 2009 to the Asia/Pacific and Europe, Middle East and Africa regions. It features Password Traveler software, which allows the user to create and access a password-protected privacy zone. The secure area of the drive can account for up to 90% of the drive's capacity and does not require administrator rights. The DataTraveler 310 has a protective cap that snaps onto the back for the drive for convenient storage when not in use. Apple has released a new support document for its Aperture photo editing and management software for photographers. Version 3 was introduced earlier this month. After you upgrade Aperture from an earlier version to Aperture 3, Aperture may quit unexpectedly when opening or when you enter the Aperture 3 upgrade serial number, Apple says. Apple has launched a MacBook repair extension program for hard drives issues (http://www.apple.com/support/macbook/hd/repairextension/). The company says it's determined that "a very small percentage" of hard drives that were used in MacBook systems, sold between approximately May 2006 and December 2007, may fail under certain conditions. If your MacBook was purchased in the date range listed above and shows a flashing question mark on the screen, take it to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider and they'll examine the hard drive to confirm if it's eligible for a replacement, free of charge, under this program. Abode AIR 2.0 coming to smarpthones
Adobe Systems is readying a mobile version of Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR), its runtime for running Flash and Web applications outside of a browser, reports "InfoWorld" (http://www.infoworld.com/d/developer-world/adobe-air-20-full-featured-fl...). The company plans to demonstrate AIR 2.0 running on a Google Android-based smartphone today at the Mobile Word Congress in Barcelona. Intel preparing six-core chips for high-end desktops
Intel is preparing six-core chips for high-end desktops and servers for release in the first half of this year, reports "Computerworld" (http://www.computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/technology/six-core-chips-on-int...). I'd expect these babies to appear in upcoming Mac Pros. 

 The six-core chips will be based on the company's latest Westmere architecture and deliver faster performance and more power savings compared to earlier quad-core chips. The chips will contain 1.17 billion transistors and include 12MB of cache, a company spokesman says. 

The new chips are made using the 32-nanometer process, which is also used to make the company's latest Core processors introduced last month. The base architecture of both the chips are the same, but the six-core chips won't include integrated graphics capabilities. Users will need to buy a discrete graphics card to work with the chips, says "Computerworld."

It complies with the SD‚Ñ¢ Association Specification 3.00 to meet Class 10 requirements. Flurry: iPad announcements fuels interest in the iPhone OS

LaCie announces Rugged eSATA
LaCie (http://www.lacie.com) has announced the Rugged eSATA, a mobile external hard drive that features a Power eSATA interface. Bus-powered when connected to a USB-eSATA combo port, it purportedly offers transfer speeds of up to 90MB/second. The USB-eSATA combo interface, also known as Power eSATA, features a slightly different connector than eSATA and is frequently found on late-model laptops. Apple releases firmware update for the Apple TV
Apple has released firmware update 3.0.2 for the Apple TV. According to "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) it appears to be related to the release of Aperture 3.0, which made changes to how that software shares images over the local network, in addition to adding support for iPhoto's Places and Faces features. Users have also reported that since applying the update their Apple TV has stopped experiencing problems related to switching its HDMI output cable, the article adds. Firmware update 3.0.2 also tweaks the user interface to enhance the readability of text. According to new data released by the NPD Group -- and as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com -- Apple came in fifth place among both physical store locations and for its online presence in total revenue in the U.S. Apple's retail stores ranked behind major stores Best Buy, Walmart, Staples and Target, respectively. The top overall Web seller was Dell, followed by Amazon, Best Buy and HP, with Apple coming in fifth. NPD based the rankings on tracked consumer technology revenue in 2009. It purportedly applies protection to a compiled application in minutes without programming. AppProtect is a new product in Excel Software's extensive line of software and document protection and license management tools for Mac OS X and Windows computers. It can be used standalone or in conjunction with the Safe Activation or WebActivation web server for automated license activation. A software vendor opens the AppProtect window, selects the desired options and clicks a button to generate a protected application. The vendor's application is wrapped with an activation process that presents a dialog to the customer on first launch. Once activated, the software will run on that computer without user interaction, but application files can't be copied and used on any other computer. Designed for home, office, classroom or remote-meeting use, the Intuos4 Wireless provides mobility and freedom when working with Bluetooth-enabled desktop or laptop computers, says Don Varga, senior product manager for Wacom's line of professional branded products. QuickerTek releases nCard for MacBooks, MacBook Pr
QuickerTek has released the US$89.95 nCard (http://www.quickertek.com/products/nCard_2010.php) for use with a MacBook, MacBook Pro or Mac mini with any wireless network. The company says that users of the new nCard can expect wireless speeds "that are the absolute fastest the wireless network can manage." To boost performance even further, this card can be upgraded with an external antenna. That means even more distance from the wireless access point. The nCard offers compatibility with all Apple AirPort Base Stations, as well as Linksys, Belkin and virtually all other wireless network hardware, including the "draft N" equipment. ProSecure, the specialized network security brand by NetGear, has unveiled the ProSecure UTM5, a gateway security appliance designed to extend enterprise-class Unified Threat Management (UTM) technology to any small business, home networks for telecommuters, and small branch offices around five users in size. Distributed via NetGear's channel partner program, the ProSecure UTM5 appliances come with simple subscription options without any per-user licensing. The new version not only includes the ability to publish applications and virtual desktops, but also allows the management of user thin client configurations from within the application console.
