Apple ships 8.8 million iPhones in first quarter
Apple moved ahead of Motorola in unit sales in the first quarter of 2010, with the iPhone taking a 3% share of the total cell phone market, according to the iSuppli research group (http://www.isuppli.com). In fact, Research In Motion (RIM) and Apple rose to the fifth and sixth positions in the global market for all types of cell phones, while Motorola fell to eighth place. RIM, whose cell phone line consists entirely of Blackberry smart phone devices, achieved the best results of the Top 10 cell phone brands in the first quarter, with its shipments rising by 364,000 units or 3.6% compared to the fourth quarter of 2009. This defied the industrywide slowdown and caused the company’s rank to rise to No. 5 in the global cell phone market, up from eighth place in the fourth quarter of 2009. Apple in the first quarter shipped 8.8 million iPhones giving it a 3.04 percent share of global shipments. Company shipments rose by 0.2% from 8.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2009, giving it the...

Apple responds to Japanese iPad/SIM lock confusion
Softbank Mobile -- the exclusive iPhone carrier in Japan -- had said that the 3G version of the iPads sold in Japan could only be used on its mobile network. That’s because Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in January that the devices would be unlocked outside the U.S. and usable on any carrier willing to provide a micro-SIM card for it. However, Apple tells "The Wall Street Journal" (http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2010/05/15/apple-clarifies-japanese-ipad-sim...) that, while Japanese 3G iPads will only work with Softbank’s 3G service in Japan, outside of Japan, those iPads are unlocked, so they can be used with SIMs for local carriers in their respective markets. Whether 3G iPads purchased outside of Japan will work in Japan will depend on the roaming agreement that the users’s home carrier has established in the country, the spokeswoman said.

DigiTimes: Foxconn to ship 24 million iPhone 4Gs this year
Foxconn will ship 24 million units of Apple's latest iPhone (the 4G) this year, according to Digitimes (http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20100517VL200.html) senior analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says, citing sources from Taiwan-based component makers. The research group thinks the iPhone 4G will be unveiled on June 7 at Apple's 2010 Worldwide Developer Conference. Kuo says the iPhone 4G will adopt IPS (in-plane switching) panels with FFS (fringe-field switching) technology and a 960√ó640 resolution. By incorporating FFS technology, which enables a wider viewing angle and clearer visual quality under in sunlight, Apple is aiming to improve the handset's e-book reader features and promote its iBookstore, he adds. According to DigiTimes, the iPhone 4G will run on the Arm Cortex A8 processor and a 512MB memory module from Samsung Electronics. It will double the memory capacity seen in the iPhone 3GS to take advantage of the multi-tasking capability of the iPhone 4.0 platform, Kuo predicts.

Netbooks still hot, but tablets will cool their sales a bit
Starting in February 2009, ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com) forecast that approximately 35 million netbooks would ship into world markets in the course of the year. That estimate was viewed in some quarters as unrealistically high. However the final 2009 shipment numbers -- 36.3 million netbooks shipped -- have confirmed that the forecast was perhaps a little conservative, according to the research group. In 2010, netbook shipments are expected to reach 58 million while a new element has been added to the mobile consumer electronics market equation: the media tablet, initially personified by Apple’s iPad. How will mobile CE markets react to a “new kid on the block” so soon after the start of the netbook craze? “We expect the netbook market to fragment according to different regional value propositions,” says principal analyst Jeff Orr. “Functionality will be added to mainstream netbook products while at the same time an entry-level netbook solution will grow, with the aim of...

Vietnam tells companies to curb iPhone imports to trim deficit
Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications told companies not to import “too many” iPhones, as the government tries to cut purchases of luxury items to narrow the trade deficit, reports "Bloomberg" (http://www.thanhniennews.com/2010/Pages/20100507180250.aspx). “Phone companies should carefully consider their import plans of iPhones as well as other related 3G equipment,” the article quotes Nguyen Thanh Hung, vice minister of information and communication, as saying. “We need to economize, and we shouldn’t waste our money on luxury items” as Vietnam struggles with a widening shortfall, Hung said in a telephone interview Wednesday from Hanoi. For the four months through April, Vietnam posted a $4.65 billion trade shortfall, compared with a surplus reported at the same time a year ago. For the year to date, imports surged 36% to $24.81 billion, notes "Bloomberg." Telephone operators and service providers need to carefully work on import plans to avoid “massive” purchases of...

Someone is going to be in BIG trouble. A Vietnamese site, "Tinte" (http://www.tinhte.com/threads/408209-Ro-ri-MacBook-nhua-doi-moi), that recently got their hands on a (purported) next gen iPhone is claiming to now have obtained a leaked version of a fresh of the MacBook. According to "Tinte", the MacBook model 7,1 sports a 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, and has a GeForce 320M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with the main memory. It has a 1280x800 pixel widescreen display, a 250GB 5400 RPM hard drive, and 2GB of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM. If "Tinte" isn't pulling our legs, it's likely we'll see an official announcement of the tweaked MacBook next week. Along with a refreshed MacBook Air, perhaps?

Google's WiFi debacle 'shows lack of concern for...
An admission that Google's StreetView cars were gathering private information from WiFi networks shows the company's lack of concern for privacy and the need for government inspection of the data the company is collecting and storing, "Consumer Watchdog" (http://www.consumerwatchdog.org) says. The scandal only came to light because the German government raised concerns prompting Google to audit its practices, the nonpartisan consumer advocacy organization claims. Consumer Watchdog said appropriate government agencies must now act to ensure that the ill-gotten information is completely deleted from the Internet giant's massive global network of servers. "Once again Google has demonstrated a lack of concern for privacy," says John Simpson, consumer advocate with the nonprofit group. "Its computer engineers run amok, push the envelope and gather whatever data they can until their fingers are caught in the cookie jar. Then a Google executive apologizes, mouthing bafflegab about how...

Search warrants in iPhone prototype case to be unsealed
Search warrant documents in an investigation of the possible theft of an iPhone prototype will be made public, , reports "Bloomberg" (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aI8u4GQzoER0). Judge Clifford V. Cretan in Redwood City has ruled against the San Mateo County District Attorney’s office, which argued that unsealing the documents will reveal identities of potential witnesses and compromise the investigation. Media organizations argued they should have access to the documents based on constitutionally protected free-speech rights. The county’s argument relies only on its right to “maintain the security of an ongoing investigation,” Katherine Keating, a lawyer for the media organizations said in an e-mail to "Bloomberg." “What the District Attorney hasn’t done beyond making these vague assertions is explain what exactly is in the records” that justifies keeping them secret in light of “the public’s right of access to judicial records." Based on Apple’s claim...

USITC to investigate Apple's complaints against Kodak
The US International Trade Commission (USITC) has voted to to institute an investigation of certain digital imaging devices and related software regarding Apple's claims against Kodak over patent infringement. The products at issue in this investigation are digital still cameras, digital video cameras, and related software. In an online note (http://www.usitc.gov/press_room/news_release/2010/er0513hh2.htm) the USITC says that by instituting this investigation (337-TA-717), the USITC has not yet made any decision on the merits of the case. The USITC's Chief Administrative Law Judge will assign the case to one of the USITC's six administrative law judges (ALJ), who will schedule and hold an evidentiary hearing. The ALJ will make an initial determination as to whether there is a violation of section 337; that initial determination is subject to review by the Commission." Last month Apple announced it was countersuing Kodak, claiming the company's devices copy the technology that it uses...

Chinese workers to sue iPhone contractor
Forty-four workers in Suzhou, China, are planning to sue Taiwan-based Wintek alleging they were poisoned while cleaning iPhone screens with a chemical called n-hexane, according to Stratfor Global Intelligence (http://www.stratfor.com/). At least 62 Wintek workers have been hospitalized since August 2009 due to n-hexane poisoning, a chemical “which can cause nerve damage and sometimes paralysis, the article adds. The US Department of Labor describes n-hexane this way: "n-Hexane is a narcotic agent; an irritant to the eyes, upper respiratory tract, and skin; and a neurotoxin. Exposure of humans to 5,000 ppm n-hexane for 10 minutes causes marked vertigo; exposure to 1,500 ppm results in headache and slight nausea [Hathaway et al. 1991; Clayton and Clayton 1982]. In industrial settings, exposure to levels exceeding 1,000 ppm have been reported to cause mild symptoms of narcosis [Hathaway et al. 1991]. Eye and upper respiratory tract irritation has been reported to occur in humans...

Apple to debut online music streaming service at WWDC?
Apple is allegedly set to announce plans to launch an online music streaming service similar to Spotify soon. How soon? As in next month's Worldwide Developer Conference, according to several online rumors. Speculated to debut on June 7, the service -- if it is coming -- would likely be based on Apple's purchase of Lala six months ago. A note at the Lala web site (http://www.lala.com) says "The Lala service will be shutting down on May 31" and "unfortunately, we are no longer accepting new users." Lala -- which offered "the first and only free fully licensed service to instantly provide anywhere web access to an existing music library such as iTunes" -- was purchased by Apple earlier this year. The goal is probably to allow Apple to implement a new iTunes feature that would allow users to stream their purchased media content remotely. In fact, rumors of such a service surfaced earlier this year. Purportedly, the service would allow iTunes shoppers to build up a digital video...

Apple could become the largest company in the US
Apple is now America's third-largest company by stock market value. Over the past three years, its shares have more than doubled in price, while those ofnumber one, Exxon Mobile, and number two, Microsoft, have fallen slightly. If that trend continues, Apple will be America's largest company by year's end, according to a "SmartMoney" report (http://www.smartmoney.com/Investing/Stocks/apple-may-soon-be-americas-la...). Of course, just where Apple ranks by size depends on how you define size. If sales are a better measure of economic weight than stock market value, then Apple is No. 42 -- four spots below Dell. However, "SmartMoney" says that may not be a fair comparison as Apple turns 29 cents of each sales dollar into operating profit, versus a nickel for Dell. And even ranked by net profit, Apple isn't among America's top 10 companies. "That raises a common question about the stock: Have its popularity and price gotten ahead of its underlying economic value?" "SmartMoney" says. "To...

"We can sit by and watch Apple continue to use our patented inventions without paying, or we can do something about it," said Eric Bear, MONKEYmedia's CEO. "Synergy between inventors and manufacturers is healthy, and we love that Apple believes in our technology. We simply prefer open communications and fair compensation." The lawsuit was filed in the Western District of Texas -- Austin Division. Our player doesn’t just simply stream video, it must also secure the content, handle reporting for our advertisers, render the video using a high performance codec to ensure premium visual quality, communicate back with the server to determine how long to buffer and what bitrate to stream, and dozens of other things that aren’t necessarily visible to the end user. Not all video sites have these needs, but for our business these are all important and often contractual requirements." HTML5 is being developed as the next major revision of HTML (HyperText...

C4 conference canned; Apple blamed
New restrictions that Apple added to its iPhone software developer kit (SDK) have led an independent programmer to cancel a conference devoted to Mac programming and computer science, according to a "CNET" report (http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-20004869-264.html). Jonathan "Wolf" Rentzsch announced Wednesday in an online post (http://rentzsch.tumblr.com/post/592949476/c4-release) that he had canceled the C4 conference after four years organizing it because of new wording in a section of the iPhone OS 4.0 software developer kit. He wrote: "With resistance to Section 3.3.1 so scattershot and meek, it's become clear that I haven't made the impact I wanted with C4. It's also clear my interests and the Apple programming community's interests are farther apart than I had hoped." "... By itself Section 3.3.1 wasn't enough to cause me to quit C4. I've weathered Apple lying to me and their never-ending series of autocratic App Store shenanigans. But unlike previous issues such as the...

Adobe founders: Apple could undermine the next chapter of the web
Adobe founders Chuck Genschke and John Warnock have posted an online letter (http://www.adobe.com/choice/openmarkets.html) in regards to the company's ongoing feud ... er, debate ... with Apple on the merits -- or lack thereof -- of Flash. Here's a sampling of the letter: "When markets are open, anyone with a great idea has a chance to drive innovation and find new customers. Adobe's business philosophy is based on a premise that, in an open market, the best products will win in the end — and the best way to compete is to create the best technology and innovate faster than your competitors. "That, certainly, was what we learned as we launched PostScript and PDF, two early and powerful software solutions that work across platforms. We openly published the specifications for both, thus inviting both use and competition. In the early days, PostScript attracted 72 clone makers, but we held onto our market leadership by out-innovating the pack. More recently, we've done the same thing...

ABI Research: 2012 will Be a 'bellwether' year for 4G
ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com) has been tracking cities and population coverage for 4G for the past year. At the end of 2009 there were more than 170 802.16e carriers across 65 countries, covering 480 million people. That number is projected to cross the one billion mark by the fourth quarter of 2012 (4Q 2012). USB dongles have been an excellent vehicle to prime the market along with CPE and laptops, says the research group, but mobile handsets will be essential to the success of WiMAX. Yota, Sprint, and Clearwire have already started beefing up their lineups with models from HTC and Samsung. Meanwhile, mobile operators are seeking out LTE licenses. Twenty carriers will launch by 4Q 2010. Population coverage lags WiMAX but will catch up, reaching 600 million people by 4Q 2012. LTE coverage will start in urban hotspots but carriers indicate they will push coverage rapidly in order to handle the increasing mobile data wave.   The 4G market could well have 150 million...

Google-AdMob decision postponed due to Apple-Quattro deal
A decision due this week on whether to prevent Google from purchasing the AdMob advertising network has been postponed because of complications created by Apple's aggressive foray into online advertising, according to a report in the "New York Times" (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/12/technology/12google.html). The Federal Trade Commission (FCC) got a two-week extension from Google and AdMob for its review of Google’s US$750 million acquisition, two people briefed on the review process told the "Times." The agency wants to use the additional time, in part, to better understand the competitive effects of Apple’s purchase of Quattro Wireless, an AdMob rival, and Apple’s impending introduction of its new iAds mobile advertising system, the article adds. Google, which derives 99% of its revenue from online ads, announced in November its intention to purchase AdMob, one of the world's largest mobile ad networks, for $750 million. The deal immediately raised antitrust concerns. It was...

Handset navigation systems to reach 180 million by 2015
A new ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com) forecast for handset-based navigation shipments finds they are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 43% over the next five years, rising from 30 million in 2010 to 181 million in 2015. Telematics and navigation practice director Dominique Bonte comments: "The handset navigation boom is largely driven by free turn-by-turn navigation solutions recently made available by Nokia and Google. During its last earnings call, Nokia announced that Ovi Maps had already been downloaded more than 10 million times. While Google Maps Navigation was initially only available on Android phones in the US, it is expected to be introduced gradually on other platforms and in other markets, as demonstrated by the recent launch in the UK." As a consequence, the latest financial results from leading personal navigation device vendors TomTom and Garmin show they are starting to suffer from saturating and even declining PND sales in North...

Survey: 30/70 revenue split is unfair
Eighty percent of developers in North America think they should receive more than 70% of the revenue generated by their apps in an app store according to the Spring North American Development Survey, an in-depth survey of over 400 developers conducted last month by Evans Data Corp. (http://www.evansdata.com), which provides regularly updated IT industry market intelligence based on in-depth surveys of the global developer population. Perhaps consequentially, app stores are the preferred distribution model for only 15% of North American developers, with over half preferring direct sales to end-users or enterprises. Additionally, developers bridle against app store imposed restrictions on price and content. Over 70% thought that app stores should not impose any restrictions on price, and while a third thought content restrictions were acceptable, almost half thought there should be none at all. "Virtually all of the best known app stores have fallen in line directly with the 30 / 70...

Arguments to be heard in 'iPhone prototype' case
A Silicon Valley judge will hear arguments later this week in a dispute over unsealing records about the criminal investigation into what may have been a prototype iPhone purchased by a blog, reports "CNET" (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-20004673-37.html?tag=mncol). San Mateo County Judge Clifford Cretan has scheduled a hearing for 9 a.m. on Friday, May 14, in his courtroom in Redwood City, Calif. Cretan previously approved a police request to search the home office of "Gizmodo" editor Jason Chen, which resulted in a hailstorm of criticism. Media organizations including "CNET," the "Associated Press" and "Bloomberg" are planning to ask Cretan to unseal an affidavit prepared by a San Mateo County detective asking to search Chen's home. The coalition says that under California law, the affidavit became a public document after 10 days and that its release could reveal whether prosecutors followed proper procedures when searching a newsroom. The San Mateo County district attorney is...

Apple: the iPhone still leads the Android in market share
The NPD research group recently reported that the market share for Google’s Android platform was now higher than the iPhone’s. Apple disagrees and tells the "Wall Street Journal" (http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2010/05/10/android-vs-the-iphone-the-battle-...) the info is "limited" and misleading. Apple points to other figures out recently from IDC indicating that the iPhone has 16.1% of the smart-phone market on a world-wide basis. Those figures put the iPhone well ahead of Android handset makers HTC and Motorola. “This is a very limited report on 150,000 U.S. consumers responding to an online survey and does not account for the more than 85 million iPhone and iPod touch customers world-wide,” Apple spokeswoman Natalie Harrison told the "Journal" in speaking of the NPD report. “We had a record quarter with iPhone sales growing by 131%, and with our new iPhone OS 4.0 software coming this summer, we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon."

Symantec: beware of Apple gift card phishing scam
Creative online crooks have been ripping off Apple gift card holders for more than a month, according to security software vendor Symantec. "eSecurity Planet" (http://www.esecurityplanet.com/features/article.php/3881231/Phishing-Sca...) says the phishing scam "requires a little bit of luck for the bad guys and lot of naivety on the part of the card holder." The con artists set up a phishing site using a typosquatted URL -- a URL that's a deliberate misspelling of Apple or some derivation of Apple's online store -- and then lies in wait for those folks who hastily typed in the erroneous address. Once the page is loaded, the bogus site appears to be a legitimate Apple site, complete with the correct customer support phone number and the same look and feel of Apple's consumer web sites. "With the hook baited, the crooks try to reel in consumers by providing what looks like a safe and simple way for card holders to check the balance on their Apple gift cards," notes "eSecurity Planet." US-CERT warns of Safari vulnerability
The United States Computer Emergency Readiness team (US-CERT) is warning that Safari contains a vulnerability in the handling of window objects, which may allow a remote, unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable system. "Apple Safari fails to properly handle references to window objects. Safari can allow a window object to be deleted while references to the object may still exist," US-CERT says "If JavaScript code then attempts to use the deleted window object, this can result in the use of an invalid pointer. This pointer can be controlled by an attacker through the use of JavaScript. Exploit code for this vulnerability is publicly available. We have confirmed Apple Safari 4.0.5 on the Windows platform to be vulnerable. Other versions may also be affected." By convincing a victim to view an HTML document (web page, HTML email, or email attachment) with Apple Safari, an attacker could run arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running the application...

Apple & AT&T exclusivity deal 'confirmed' to...
The gang at "Engadget" (http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/confirmed-apple-and-atandt-signed-fiv...) say they can now confirm that Apple and AT&T entered into a five-year iPhone exclusive in 2007, based on court documents filed by Apple in California. "An ongoing California class-action lawsuit filed in 2007 claims that Apple and AT&T illegally exerted a monopoly over iPhone service by telling customers the iPhone's required service contract was two years long when the Apple/AT&T exclusivity deal was actually for five years -- thus requiring buyers to re-up with AT&T for three years (and not, say, T-Mobile) if they wanted to keep using the iPhone," the article says. "Obviously Apple had to respond to these allegations, and in addition to arguing that no one was ever promised an unlocked iPhone after two years, the company's lawyers repeatedly confirm the existence of the five-year agreement while noting it was publicly reported in "USA Today'." Okay, so Apple, when...
