Tan Kah Kee, a prominent local Chinese leader, played a significant part in the anti-Japanese movement in Singapore. He came to Singapore at the age of 17 as a penniless immigrant and later became a millionaire. He spent most of his money opening schools in China. In 1919 he raised money to open the first Chinese middle school in Singapore, the Nanyang Hua Chiao Middle School. When the Japanese invaded Malaya, Tan Kah Kee formed the Chung Kuo Council for general mobilization to fight the Japanese. He fled to Sumatra eleven days before Singapore surrendered and from there to Java.
