The Governor of the Straits Settlements and High Commissioner for both the Federated and Unfederated States. He held the courtesy rank of 'Commander-in-Chief' but did not actually have any military authority. When the Japanese landed at Kota Bahru he had been Governor for seven years. After the British surrendered, he was imprisoned in Changi Goal until August 1942 when he was placed in a prison camp in Formosa (Taiwan). Lady Thomas went to Changi Goal and then Sime Road camp. Sir Shenton died at home in Britain on January 15, 1962. He was 82.
