  1. THE GAUNLET - THE RUN FOR HOME

  3. "Gunners be on your toes, we're on our
  4. own now" you hear yourself say over 
  5. your aircraft's intercom.
  6.  
  7. Bombing raids over Germany always 
  8. produced a large number of downed 
  9. aircraft and stragglers. The stragglers
  10. due to one circumstance or another 
  11. were aircraft that had to drop out of
  12. the main body of the bomber formation.
  13.  
  14. Flying alone or in small groups 
  15. exposed the stragglers to intense 
  16. attack by fighters because their 
  17. smaller defensive fire made them more
  18. successful targets.
  19.  
  20.               Mission Orders
  21.  
  22. As the leader of a small formation of
  23. B-17s that have dropped behind the 
  24. main bomber stream after a raid on 
  25. Hamburg it is up to you to guide the
  26. group home and save as many of your
  27. wingmen as you can.
  28.  
  29. The Luftwaffe is up and they are ready.
  30. They know the way you came in and the
  31. way you will probably take to get home.
  32. The most direct route is straight for
  33. home. It will be up to you to set the
  34. course to take to get home. You will have
  35. to find that chink in the "armor" of the
  36. Luftwaffe fighter defenses to make it
  37. back home safely. It's all up to you.
