INSTALLATION
This installation discussion assumes you have the three ARCed
files that contain the programs and data files. You obviously
have the documentation, either in hardcopy or on a file, as you
are reading these instructions.
What you need to type will be in all CAPITAL letters followed
by the symbol <CR>. <CR> indicates you should press the
Carriage Return (or equivalent key) on your computer.
Information on what is happening and what you should do will be
in primarily lower case, like this paragraph.
(The current files, with included programs, sizes, and dates
are listed in the Appendix.) Each ARCed file will expand and
fit on a single 360k floppy disk.
Format 7 blank disks.
Label the first set of three as VIT1-1.ARC, VIT1-2.ARC, and
VIT1-3.ARC. These will hold the ARCed programs of the same
name(s). Copy the files to the disks of the same name. Also
copy your deARCing program to each disk (I will assume PKXARC,
as it is the most commonly used in my area.)
Label the second set of four as VITACAL DISK 1, VITACAL DISK 2,
and VITACAL DISK 3 and TEMP. These will be the working disks.
(TEMP will be used by Floppy drive users as an interim step to
hold the data files prior to putting them on the working disk.
Put the disk labeled VITACAL DISK 1 in drive A:, and the disk
labeled VIT1-1.ARC (with the respective program) in Drive B:
and perform the following.
A: <CR>
B:PKXARC B:VIT1-1 <CR>
This will extract the programs to Disk 1.
Put the disk labeled VITACAL DISK 2 in drive A:, and the disk
labeled VIT1-2.ARC (with the respective program) in Drive B:
and perform the following.
A: <CR>
B:PKXARC B:VIT1-2 <CR>
Put the disk labeled VITACAL DISK 3 (TEMP for dual floppy
users) in drive A:, and the disk labeled VIT1-3.ARC (with the
respective program) in Drive B: and perform the following.
A: <CR>
B:PKXARC B:VIT1-3 <CR>

VITACAL GENERAL INTENT OF VITACAL VITACAL
This program is designed to be used as a guide to healthier
living. It is only designed as a general reference and should
not replace consultation with medical personnel nor should it
replace careful planning of activities or dietary planning.
People in the U.S. have taken a dramatic turn toward healthier
living and physical conditioning. Everyone wants to look slim,
trim, and 21. While the goal is good, genetics rears its ugly
head with a majority of the populace who do not naturally have
that slim build. For them to look like a Cheryl Tieg involves
slave labor, starvation and malnutrition.
Malnutrition? In the best fed country in the world? Yes, that
is frequently the case. In an attempt to reduce calories,
people are reducing their food intake on an arbitrary basis and
frequently are not getting the nourishment their body needs to
convert from a 500 pound blob of blubber to the 125 pound sex
object they desire to be. Starvation and/or fad diets will
cause an initial weight loss, but not a sustained one. Any
sudden change in diet will cause a weight change: primarily
based on a change in the water retention in the body. The
change may also cause the body to be short on essential
nutrients, which it will attempt to pull from its own reserves.
There is only a limited amount of most vitamins stored in the
body. Once that reserve has been depleted, poor health is only
a step away.
But how do you stay healthy while reducing your weight? You
are trying to reduce the calories you take in versus the
calories you expend while maintaining a healthy diet consisting
of the required vitamins and minerals. That is where VITACAL
(c) comes in. Rather than restrict what you eat, it allows you
to plan your lifestyle around healthy activities and healthy
foods that YOU ENJOY.
FAT or TRIM IT IS YOUR DECISION!
How does a normal individual lose weight? By burning more
calories than he consumes. While this statement sounds
simplistic, it implies MUCH, MUCH MORE than it says. The only
parts of the body that consume calories in significant amounts
are the muscles, i.e. the more muscles you have the more
calories you require to maintain a given body weight. Diets
that rely primarily on reducing calorie intake to reduce weight
are effective in the short term, but very bad in the long run.
How can losing weight in the short term be bad in the long
term? By simply reducing calories, it causes your body to draw
on the energy it has stored. This energy is stored not only in
the fat cells, but in the MUSCLES as well. Your body will
'eat' both fat and muscle tissue to keep you going. When you
end your diet (as 99% of all people do eventually), whether
because you have reached the desired weight or because you
VITACAL BETA Documentation -8- VITACAL
VITACAL GENERAL INTENT OF VITACAL VITACAL
could not keep up the regime, you will have less muscle tissue
than when you started. That is, you will have less of the
primary means of burning calories. If you return to a diet
where previously you maintained your weight, you will start to
GAIN weight.
Why do you gain weight? Your body will attempt to store any
excess calories. Since less muscle means you no longer have
the means of burning as many calories as before, that leaves
more to be stored as FAT. You will go on the same calorie
reduction plan, etc till eventually you are like the little
doughboy; the bathroom scales say you are at the recommended
weight, but you look like a little ball of fat. Picture
yourself, the 'ideal weight' with arms and legs the size of
pretzels and your little fat gut and butt hanging out. Now,
isn't that a pleasant thought?
How do you prevent this little fat man from taking over?
Simple, by controlling your calorie intake and increasing your
calorie usage. This will burn off the unsightly fat while
increasing your basic muscle tissue that will keep the fat off.
Which would you prefer, a soft fat body at the 'ideal weight'
or a firm well proportioned body a few pounds heavier?
FAT or FIRM! IT IS YOUR DECISION!
VITACAL BETA Documentation -9- VITACAL
VITACAL GENERAL INTENT OF VITACAL VITACAL
HOW CAN VITACAL HELP?
The program will analyze your basic life-style to determine
your requirements for calorie intake and 14 vitamins and
minerals. While these may not be the optimum selection, they
are based on the data that was most prevalently available.
Daily intake of these items will be recommended in two formats;
1) Federal RDA recommendations, and 2) you may also manually
substitute your own requirements for those listed in part two,
if you disagree with the program's determinations.
After the basic requirements have been determined, the program
will track your compliance over a (continuing) one year period.
Each day, you will enter your food intake, activities, and
weight into the file. The program will calculate your intake
and your output and store it in your data file. At your
leisure, you may have the program analyze your actions and show
you how you have been doing. This is available for any
specified period of time, with a specified starting date and
ending date. NOTE: While the input section will 'roll over'
the year (i.e. will allow you to put in data from Dec 87 to
Jan 88, etc) the analysis programs are not as versatile. To
analyze this data, you would need to analyze from ' 1 to 31
Dec, then from 1 to 31 Jan separately' to get a valid picture.
DAILY WEIGHT CHECK
While most diet plans recommend you weigh only once a week, I
require daily weigh-ins. WHY? Very simple. Diet programs are
trying to boost your confidence in the plan by always showing
you as 'losing' weight. The weight of a normal person, even
one involved in a true starvation diet, will go up or down by
2% on a daily basis just based on water retention. By limiting
you to one weigh-in per week, they hope to show you the overall
trend towards a lower weight. This program will graphically
show you the entire time period on a day by day basis and show
you the overall trend. (An analysis of 1 Aug to 30 Sep will
show 61 separate points over that period and allow you to see
the overall trend, including fluctuations.)

VITACAL INTENDED AUDIENCE VITACAL
INTENDED AUDIENCE
The program is designed to be used in a multitude of settings:
1) by a single individual tracking his/her own actions, 2) at a
health club, or similar establishment, where the clientele is
allowed to track their activities on the club computer, or 3)
in a medical establishment tracking the performance of their
patients. Password protection for the personal data files can
be invoked to restrict the access of others, if desired; or not
used if privacy is not an issue. While the protection level is
minimal, it is sufficient to prevent a casual user from looking
at others data without authorization.
The program is also configured to run on a machine with a hard
disk, or one with multiple floppy disk drives. It assumes that
each of the 3 major segments (1. programs, 2. personnel
files, and 3. food data files) is stored on a different drive
and/or in different subdirectories. On a hard disk system,
this may simply be different sections/paths. On a floppy
system, the programs and food files are stored on one disk, and
the personal files are stored on a separate drive. (NOTE: as
the food files increase in number and size, this may not always
be possible. It may require the user to pare down the files
and file sizes to meet his/her needs.)
VITACAL BETA Documentation -12- VITACAL
VITACAL PERSONAL DATA SECURITY VITACAL
PERSONAL DATA SECURITY
The programs are designed to provide a small level of security
for personal data. This is accomplished by requiring the use
of a password in order to access an individual's file. The
decision to use or not use password control is determined by
the system operator when the program is configured. This may
be changed at any time (without affecting the running of the
programs) by reconfiguring the program.
When an individual is introduced to the program, he is
requested to put in his personal password. This is required
for 'Introduction' whether password protection is implemented
or not. There is not an automatic default password. The
password should be something that can be easily remembered, but
uncommon enough to not be guessed by someone playing with the
system. (The SYSOP can read and change anyone's password
through the configuration program.) This password is stored in
code in one of the files. If 'password' is implemented, an
individual will be asked to put in the proper password whenever
they want to access the file. Unfortunately, that includes
each time a person changes to a different segment of the
program (such as from analysis to putting in your activities.)
This was a necessary embellishment because people tend to
forget to return the program to the 'DEMO' mode, leaving their
personal data available for anyone to access.
There is also a master password that the system operator puts
in through the configuration program that will allow access to
any file. I highly recommend that it not be 'SECRET',
'PRIVATE', your own name (or any part of it) etc or any similar
common phrases that some unauthorized individual might easily
think of.
WARNING: The password protection allows only minimal
protection. Any reasonably competent hacker can break the code
in a short period.
NOTE: The 'person' set as the default individual also does not
require a password. This is so the system can be left
operation in a demonstration mode, and has the side potential
of a single user setting it up for personal use and not
requiring continued use of a password.
VITACAL BETA Documentation -13- VITACAL
VITACAL GENERAL DISCLAIMERS VITACAL
MEDICAL ACCURACY
While VITACAL has been written as an aid to healthy living, it
is not a medical diagnostic tool and is not officially approved
by any medical association. Recommendations and values have
been determined from various books and manuals on food
requirements. While I have attempted to evaluate the various
data, its validity must always be in question.
The RDA recommendations are from data distributed by the US
Dept of Health.
CONSULT A DOCTOR BEFORE MAJOR CHANGES IN LIFESTYLE
The calculations and recommendations are based on an average
person with average eating habits and activity levels. They
are intended only to suggest possible minor alterations in your
habits to improve your health. Any radical changes in your
life style should only be attempted after consultation with
your doctor.
People who are pregnant and people who have any disease or any
health problems should not use this program, as it is not
designed for your special circumstances.
LACK OF PRIVACY OF DATA
While password protection has been designed into the data
files, they are only MINIMUM level protection. Any
semi-competent computer hacker could break into a program and
read the results. It is also possible for others to accidently
break the code and read the files.
VITACAL BETA Documentation -14- VITACAL
VITACAL GENERAL DISCLAIMERS VITACAL
ABOUT THE AUTHOR'S QUALIFICATIONS
I am not a doctor nor health specialist. I have NO training in
dietary requirements nor any similar field.
I am a 'technocrat' with a BSME and an MSIT.
After the latest changes in the rules, where the USAF expects
me to look like an 18 year old, I found myself in a pickle.
How do I maintain my standards and those of the military at the
same time. I needed a SAFE way to reduce my weight and keep my
job.
This program was the result. I needed an accurate way of
tracking what I was doing and what I was eating and how the
twain would keep me in my chosen profession. I initially tried
tracking everything with pencil and paper, and found that to be
so time consuming that I started skipping days. From there I
advanced to a spreadsheet program, but found myself spending a
lot of time looking up the same values. This was not only very
time consuming, it was also something I found extremely
objectionable. Once I have looked something up, I wanted it to
'stay looked up'. As I am lazy by nature, this program
resulted.

VITACAL HOW TO USE VITACAL VITACAL
+-----------------------------------------------------------+

*** NOTE: ***

You MUST run the configuration program
the first time you run VITACAL to tell
the programs where the data is located.
Otherwise the programs will not run.

+-----------------------------------------------------------+
The following will be a mini explanation of the various
segments of VITACAL and what they will do for you.
Additionally, it will give a starting point for running the
various program segments.
The program segments are designed to be on up to three (3)
different drives, partitions, etc, but can be run using one
subdirectory on a hard disk or on two floppies. I will assume,
for this explanation, that you will be using three
subdirectories. For floppy users (like me), the food and
personnel files can be combined on 1 disk and the Executable
files can be on other disks to be swapped in as needed.
GENERAL NOTES COMMON TO MOST PROGRAMS
In cases where a one character response will perform the next
option, I have used 'hot keys.' That is, you will not need to
press any key other than the one indicating your choice. These
keys are indicated in GREEN for users with a color monitor. In
other cases, where responses exist beyond a one-key level, you
will need to press a RETURN or ENTER, depending on your
machine, to indicate your choice is complete.
All letters are automatically translated to upper case.
When setting the date, all input is via the arrow keys. They
will move you from day to month to year, etc and either
increase or decrease the entry, depending on what you press.
If the program requires data files and you do not have the
current version, it will tell you. In selected cases, the
programs will automatically return to the central menu.
VITACAL BETA Documentation -16- VITACAL
VITACAL HOW TO USE VITACAL VITACAL
MAJOR PROGRAM ELEMENTS
VITA.EXE
The Central Selection program. From it, you can access any of
the other programs. Also, all other programs have an option
that will take you back to this program.
REQMOD.EXE
This is the initial program required. From it, you can
determine your individual requirements for calories, and 14
essential vitamins and minerals. This is also the program that
determines your Basic Metabolic Rate (BMR) that is used to
determine your calorie output for any individual activity.
(Explanation of BMR is included in a later segment.)
This program is also where you 'Introduce' new people to the
program.
DATIN.EXE
Using this segment, you enter your daily activities and meals.
It converts this information into data on vitamins, minerals,
and calories and stores it in you personal data file.
NOTE: This segment may also be used to plan your possible meals
by putting in the food you are thinking about eating, but not
storing the values.
ANAL.EXE
This section will allow you to analyze the data you have been
putting into the machine and, in some cases, receive a hardcopy
of the information. Outputs are in the form of a printed
output or displayed graphs.
Printed output
You may specify a specific time period of interest ranging from
one day to the full year. The program will read in the data
and print out the average value for each of the vitamins,
calories, etc, along with the recommended RDA and program
calculated values. This is on one sheet of paper or one
screen.
Please note that if you have neglected to enter anything for
the period being analyzed, those values will be averaged in as
a zero. While it may look good, it is counterproductive, as
you can not tell how well you really did.
VITACAL BETA Documentation -17- VITACAL
VITACAL HOW TO USE VITACAL VITACAL
Graphs
For those with a graphics capability, there is one other
option: a series of graphs. After you specify the time
increment you are interested in, the program will plot a graph
for each of the values specified. (NOTE: These will start at
the first day of the start month specified and end at the last
day of the stop month specified. It was easier to label the
graph accurately that way.)
NOTE: If your computer does not have a graphics capability,
choosing this option will 'crash' the program. It will not
affect the data files themselves nor the program files.
FOODAD.EXE
This allows you to add foods, modify the values of selected
foods, and build favorite recipes and store them in a data
file. NOTE: All foods and recipes are initially stored on your
Personal items food file. If you want them somewhere else, you
must specifically move them.
Modify A Food
You can call any food item in and change any or all of the
values stored for it. This allows correction of errors and
updates when more detailed information becomes available.
Add A Food
Allows you to add a favorite food to the data base. Again, you
will need to know the vitamin/mineral contents, etc, of any
food you want to add.
Build A Recipe
Everyone has a favorite recipe they would like to know the food
values of. Well, here is an easy way. First, you enter the
individual ingredients into the program, then it helps you look
up those values in the data bases. You then tell it how much
of each ingredient you need. After everything has been entered
and found, the program will ask you for a) the name of the
food, b) the number of servings the recipe will make, c) the
number of pieces in a serving (for example, '2' cups of
spaghetti with meat sauce), and c) the unit/size for the above
(example 2 'cups' of spaghetti.) It will then divide the
number of servings per the recipe into the ingredients and
allow you to call up one serving whenever you want it.

VITACAL HOW TO USE VITACAL VITACAL
DIETCON.EXE
Diet configuration program
This can make radical changes to paths, personnel files, etc.
Due to the potential damage that can occur if an unauthorized
and/or vindictive individual used it, I recommend it be stored
in a protected segment of the disk or, preferably, on a floppy
that can be locked up in a separate location.
Master Password
Sets a Master password that you can use to access any person's
files when password protection is implemented. This is useful
in an environment when you occasionally need to access
someone's files but, on a normal basis, access to the files
needs to be restricted.
Use Password Protection.
This will tell the individual program segments whether to
require a password before allowing access to an individual
files. The entry is really on Y or other, because anything
starting with other than a Y is taken to be NO.
Path to Food Files
Tells the programs on what drives, subdirectories, etc to
search for the data files on food and calorie usage
equivalents. If they are other than the same subdirectory as
the master programs, this must end in a \ (backslash).
Path to Personnel Files
Same as above, except it tells where files on individual people
reside.
Modify Individual Information
This section will allow you to modify the name, data file name,
and password of any individual having a file. It is useful
primarily if someone forgets their password or inadvertently
lets someone else see it.

Primary calculations of your requirements are based on the
following data elements:
1) Age

3) Height
4) Weight
5) Build
6) Activity Level
Use Metric System (Y/N)
Proper weight is currently determined by height and sex. At a
later date, I plan to use the NIH Body Mass Program. That
technique is listed below for comment.
The NIH Body Mass program minimizes effect of height

above 33 is serious fat
female desirable is 21-23. 27.5 is overweight.
31.5 is serious fat
CALORIE REQUIREMENTS AND USAGE
Calorie requirements are based on the Resting Metabolic Rate
(RMR). This is the minimum calorie requirement to keep an
individual alive and at a constant weight if the individual was
constantly asleep: i.e. no outside activity requiring caloric
output.
Calorie output for given activities are based on this
requirement multiplied by a factor related to the given
activity.

VITACAL APPENDIX A: SPECIAL NOTES & WARNINGS VITACAL
CONFIGURE the program.
COLORS and KEYS
Where possible, I attempted to use 'HOT KEYS'. These are
indicated by the color Green. Pressing the key without a
Carriage Return will normally produce the indicated action.
EXAMPLE: The Menus are set up as hot keys.
The <N>ext <P>revious displays will automatically
display the indicated page when you press the N or P key.
The file DIETFIG.DAT must be located on the same disk and
directory as the .EXE file you are trying to run. Where you
must use several disks, as is the case with a twin floppy drive
system, DIETFIG.DAT must be on each disk. When you change
configuration, be sure to copy a current version to each
operating disk.
GRAPHICS
People without graphics capability will crash program if they
try to draw a graph. All other segments work without the use
of graphic adapters.
FOOD DATA FILES
Do not start a food with a blank or a number.
PATHS
Subdirectories, etc, must have been made previous to entering
the program.
When you change a path:
none of the files are copied to the new path
You must copy or create any files you want there
The program is designed to be located in three subdirectories.
One could be used, but it becomes cluttered and confusing, plus
requiring a large data space. As created, it will work on a
two floppy drive system: one holding the program section and
one holding the two data file sections.
When you are checking the calorie input of a food,
Five things are shown, three are changeable
1. The number of units in a serving (fixed)
2. Estimated physical size of a serving (fixed)
3 - 5 Servings, Ounces, Grams
The displayed values are the number in a standard serving.
The highlighted one shows what units you are entering in.
Move by pressing the appropriate letter, then put in the number
of units and press <CR>

VITACAL APPENDIX A: SPECIAL NOTES & WARNINGS VITACAL
Paging of displayed foods, etc takes place when the
<A>bort <P>revious <N>ext message is shown
pressing the appropriate letter will caused paging or abort
the entry
In most, but not all, cases, pressing the escape key will
return you to the previous level/entry point
Also, in most cases, ^C (Control C) will terminate the program
A highlighted word normally indicates that is the selected mode
POSSIBLE PROBLEMS
1. Invalid file. This can occur in many areas but is
normally caused by the following.
a) Data files and Programs are different versions.
b) Path has not been properly set from the configuration
program.
c) The proper disks are not installed to match the paths.

|__ Major Program Changes
Minor Typos
This will change as I find minor errors and typos in the
programs. It will have no affect on the running of the
program.
Changes in Displays and Segments
This will indicate I have made modifications to displays and
entry formats, and possibly included additional program
segments. All data files and program segments will remain
compatible.
Major Program Changes
As the name indicates, these are major changes. They will not
be compatible with previous versions. This may include
expanding the vitamins being calculated, etc. Where possible,
I will include programs to convert old data files to the new
format(s).

VITACAL APPENDIX C: REGISTRATION VITACAL
Send your $48.95 check or money order to the author:
Rommie G Brewer
Rt 4 Box 912
Sheridan, ARkansas 72150
Please note: This is not my current address. The Program
author's job in DoD requires frequent moves. As such, the
above listed address is one that will forward mail to me
EVENTUALLY. If you have urgent questions, please see the
section on support boards.
Any questions, problems, or other correspondence should be sent
to the same address. If you have not received a reply in two
months, please send again. Mail addressed to the above address
has been known to be lost on rare occassions.
Registering (and paying) for the program will authorize you to
get the next version for half price. (Please specify this when
registering a follow-on version.)
Registration will also provide the author with the incentive to
work on improving and expanding the program.
If your current circumstances prevent you from being able pay
the registration fee (for example: parts of DoD are not
authorized to purchase shareware programs) write the author
spelling out the circumstances involved and we can attempt to
find a solution.

VITACAL APPENDIX D: HELP & SUPPORT BBS's VITACAL
[ H O W T O G E T S U P P O R T A N D H E L P ]
If you have any suggestions as to how VITACAL and its auxiliary
programs can be made more useful to you, please write me. If I
see the same suggestion from several sources I will try to
include that improvement in an up-date. Also if some part of
this manual is incomprehensible after several readings please
let me know so I can rewrite it.
Please send as much information as you can about your system
and any problem you may be having. Be sure to tell me which
version(s) of my program(s) you have. If none of the current
versions of my programs will resolve your problem I will return
the money you sent me when you registered it. If you wish to
speak on the telephone send me a number where you can be called
collect at night. Tell me what days and what times I should
try to call.
Once registered, you may use as many copies on as many machines
as you own, within your immediate organization or family. (An
immediate organization would be one located in a single
building or cluster of buildings. If you cannot walk from one
location to the other, I would not consider it within the
immediate organization.) YOU MAY NOT ALTER THE CODE IN ANY
WAY, AND YOU MAY NOT SELL IT FOR ANY PRICE. NON-PROFIT groups
and clubs may charge a reasonable copy fee up to $10.00.
Distributors that are not non-profit organizations must not
distribute VITACAL in ANY manner without written permission of
the author. Any copy given or distributed by any person or
organization must contain all files.
Pay BBS Boards. The programs may be freely posted for
download, but I would appreciate a free one year membership on
your board (not to include any special services for which for
which each use generates a fee) per 10 downloads. This is not
a requirement, but is an indication that we are both sharing in
my effort. Since I probably would not be in your area anyway,
the likelyhood of my using the board is slight.
These are the primary support BBS Boards for VITACAL as of Aug
1, 1988. If the current date is vastly different from the
listed date of the support board, I may no longer be in that
area and may not be able to provide support through these
BBS's. In such case, please write me at the listed address.

To determine your proper weight, I recommend Weight Genie.
Below is an extract with address for registration.
WEIGHT GENIE
"Weight Genie" is pure simplicity to operate. The program is
as friendly as you could hope for, yet will tell you things
about yourself that even your best friends wouldn't and
couldn't. With three simply measurements, "Weight Genie" tells
you how much fat you have, how over or underweight you are and
what your ideal weight should be.
Feel free to try "Weight Genie" out. If you like it and would
like to continue using it, you may register for only $20.00
dollars. If you don't care for it, thanks for trying it.
Whether you like it or not, feel free to give a copy to try to
anyone you think may benefit from it.

VITACAL APPENDIX E: OTHER PROGRAMS VITACAL
A fast sorting program that will work with the VITACAL data
files is SORTF by Vernon D. Buerg. SORTF will sort on any
section of a line, assuming the lines end with a <CR>. All
VITACAL data files (except the .PRS personal files) follow this
criteria. VITACAL data files should be sorted on the entire
line.
SORTF

VITACAL APPENDIX G: Mini-TUTORIAL VITACAL
This tutorial is intended to walk you through the first time
you use VITACAL. It is also a continuing use tutorial. As
such, it will point out the actions you need to take, in their
correct order, each time you use VITACAL. For detailed
instructions, see the TUTORIAL.DOC
I will assume you have installed the program, as indicated at
the beginning of this document, on a hard disk (Floppy users
will be told by the program when it can not find a file and/or
program it needs and prompted to swap disks accordingly.)
VITA
The central menu. Will direct which program will be run.
CONFIGURE THE PROGRAM.
Tell it where the data files are located. After telling it the
paths to the files, I recommend you use the option of
displaying the data files (before you exit this segment). If
you are unable to display the files, you probably made an error
in specifying the path(s) and will need to set them again.
DETERMINE YOUR REQUIREMENTS.
This segment is where you introduce a new person to the system
and change the specifications of a previous person (for
example, your manual input of requirements).
When you first introduce a new person to the program, it will
ask you to put in your height, weight, age, sex, etc, and then
calculate your requirements. Pressing the <CR> indicates you
are finished, and the program will then build a data file for
the individual. If you accidently press <CR> before you are
finished, allow the program to build the data file, then go in
and change the requirements. No harm has been done.
If you want to see the effect of changing your values, press
the control key and the letter K (^K) at the same time. (K for
calculate, as ^C is already used for other purposes). The
calculated requirements are displayed on the right hand side of
the display screen. The program automatically makes these
calculations when you exit this segment.
Manual Requirements
If you disagree with any of the requirements for vitamins and
minerals, you may go in and change them on the manual input
display. This will have no effect on the program, as both the
RDA and Manual requirements are displayed for information only.

VITACAL APPENDIX G: Mini-TUTORIAL VITACAL
PUT IN YOUR ACTIVITIES AND MEALS
On a daily basis, you will need to put in what you have eaten
and what you have done (2 separate segments.) Rather than
attempt to use the midnight to midnight day, I recommend you
think of it in a more logical fashion that is easier to keep up
with, such as from one wake-up (0530 AM?) to the next.
Put in your meals. The program will first ask you the name of
the food you have eaten, then the category number it fits in.
The name is only a memory jogger as it will be displayed with
the foods in the category once you have input everything you
have eaten. The program will automatically sort the foods by
category and then ask you to select a food from the category.
By doing this, it reduces the time spent opening and closing
files and reading in data. Select the actual food closest to
what you ate. It will then allow you to put in the amount in
Servings, Ounces, or Grams (determined by pressing the letters
S, O, G respectively). The actual mode will be highlighted,
and your input will be displayed next to the appropriate value.
Put in your activities
The program will ask you for the activity number from the
display, and then the time in hours and minutes you performed
that activity. Pressing <CR> for an activity tells it you are
finished with specific activities, and it assumes you spent the
remainder of the time sitting at ease. You will have a running
display of the time remaining for the day and the total
calories used as you put in the data. Note: If you
accidentally put in too much time for an activity, you can
change it by putting in the same activity and a negative (-)
time.
ANALYZE THE RESULTS
You may analyze the results of what you have been putting in
and how well your diet plan is working. You will have the
option of selecting a single day or a range of days and getting
the average of what you have done and consumed. Please don't
put the starting day after the ending day, as you will confuse
the program with unpredictable results. Note also that if you
did not put in any data for a given day, that day will be
averaged as a zero (0), distorting the results. A paper copy
of your results is available.
The primary means of seeing what you have done is available
only to systems with graphics capability. Select the range of
days and the values you want to analyze and the program will
draw a graph with each day marked. (NOTE: It works on a month
by month basis, so only the month selected is important.) Each
value (calories, weight, vitamins) will be displayed on a
separate graph. There is NO paper copy capability for this
data display, unfortunately.
VITACAL BETA Documentation -31- VITACAL
VITACAL APPENDIX G: Mini-TUTORIAL VITACAL
ADD/MODIFY FOODS
This is where you can add your favorite foods to a category,
and move foods from one category to another. (I recommend you
put your most commonly eaten foods into your personal category
for ease and speed of access.) You will be asked to specify
the category, then the food. A display (similar to that for
modifying your requirements) will come up with the various
categories of calories, vitamins, etc, for you to fill in.
Leaving either the ounces or grams value blank will cause the
program to calculate the missing one. Putting both in will
have the grams converted to the ounces equivalent. It assumes
you are putting in one serving, and provides you a place to put
a serving type indicator. (The HELP function is not yet
incorporated, but will be out in later versions <I HOPE>.)
You may also build a recipe by putting in the various
ingredients, then specifying a serving size. (It looks and
works very similar to the method used to put in your meals.)
It calculates the individual values from the totals of the
various foods, and divides it by the number of servings per
recipe.
