Scope and content
The work, entitled "Neo-Brut Alphabet," by Eric Metcalfe, 1997, consists of a series, produced for the exhibition "Browser" by the artist, of twenty seven acrylic paintings on card, each 38 x 25.5 cm, titled and signed by Metcalfe on the verso of each painting, and accompanied by a catalogue of the exhibition "Return to Brutopia: Eric Metcalfe, Works and Collaborations," Vancouver: UBC Fine Arts Gallery, 1992.
Note
The artist noted [on the verso of the painting titled '?'] that: "alphabets and modulars go back to the late 1960's with me. Modular painting on my part was an attempt to break away from the typical format of painting -- I gave up canvas painting at that point and subsequently I would make the Leopard Realty triangles in 1972 on wood (also modular). The alphabet project hearkens back to the Image Bank alphabet show at Burnaby Art Gallery in 1971 ([with] various artists in the show). This project I undertook as something personal and challenging for my ongoing interest in exploring the motif and codes from my arsenal of drawing experience. This was to be a drawing and ended up as a painting.
