  18. In Windows NT, if you set your pagefile (PAGEFILE.SYS) lower than the
  19. recommended amount (12 MB plus system RAM), Windows NT may have to
  20. create a temporary pagefile (TEMPPF.SYS) to operate.
  21.  
  22. If the temporary pagefile takes most of the free space on your hard
  23. disk, you may receive the following error message after you log on:
  24.  
  25.    Limited Virtual Memory
  26.    Your system is running without a properly sized paging file.
  27.    Please use the virtual memory option of the System applet in the
  28.    Control Panel to create a paging file, or to increase the initial
  29.    size of your paging file.
  30.  
  31. CAUSE
  32. =====
  33.  
  34. Windows NT displays this error message when the setting in Initial
  35. Size of the pagefile exceeds the amount of free space on the hard
  36. disk. This can occur when a temporary pagefile takes the majority of
  37. free space on the hard disk, leaving less space than the Initial Size
  38. of the pagefile setting specified in the Control Panel.
  39.  
  40. This situation can occur when the initial paging file size is reduced
  41. to an amount considerably smaller than the recommended amount and the
  42. system is restarted. At startup, the smaller paging file is created,
  43. the system then recognizes that the size is insufficient and creates a
  44. temporary paging file of up to 20 MB in the WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory.
  45. The System dialog box from Control Panel spawns, forcing you to
  46. address the paging file problem.
  47.  
  48. When the free hard disk space approaches 30 MB or lower, problems can
  49. occur in trying to correct the insufficient paging file size. The
  50. combination of the insufficient paging file and the temporary paging
  51. file can easily use all the available free hard disk space. This does
  52. not leave enough free space to create a paging file sufficient in size
  53. to eliminate the need for the temporary paging file.
  54.  
  55. The only way to free the disk space used by the temporary paging file
  56. is to create a new paging file close to the recommended size. Once
  57. there is no longer a need for the temporary paging file, it will be
  58. deleted upon the next startup of Windows NT and the disk space will be
  59. freed.
  60.  
  61. RESOLUTION
  62. ==========

  64. To eliminate the above error message, either create enough free disk
  65. space so a sufficient pagefile can be created, or use the following
  66. procedure:
  67.  
  68.    WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious,
  69.    system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT
  70.    to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems
  71.    resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this
  72.    tool at your own risk.

  74. 1. Open the Registry Editor (REGEDT32.EXE) and use the following
  75.    path:
  76.  
  77.       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
  78.       Session Manager\Memory Management
  79.  
  80. 2. Find the following value:
  81.  
  82.       PagingFiles:REG_MULTI_SZ:C:\pagefile.sys X 20
  83.  
  84. 3. From the Edit menu, choose String.
  85.  
  86. 4. Replace the first number listed (X) after PAGEFILE.SYS with the new
  87.    initial value of the pagefile size (megabytes used by the TEMPPF.SYS
  88.    and insufficient PAGEFILE.SYS).
  89.  
  90. 5. Shut down and restart Windows NT.
  91.  
  92. Because the pagefile setting will now be sufficient, the temporary
  93. pagefile will be deleted by Windows NT and there will not be Virtual
  94. Memory errors.
