SETTINGS INSTRUCTIONS
I. INTRODUCTION
These instructions explain how to set up and configure STARMENU.
You may read these on-line through the Instructions selection on
the Settings Main Menu, or you may print them out by entering
COPY Settings.Doc PRN at the DOS prompt.
Information on how to use specific features of the Settings program
is provided through help, which is accessible by pressing F1 while
in the program. The purpose of this document is to provide a more
general explanation of how to setup some of STARMENU's features.
The actual installation of STARMENU must be accomplished through the
INSTALL.EXE program. Instructions for this are contained in the
program itself, along with the README.TXT file.
IMPORTANT: The Settings program may only be run from STARMENU. If
you try to run SETTINGS from the DOS prompt you will run STARMENU
instead! This is for security reasons.
II. HOW TO ADD PROGRAMS AND CATEGORIES
Categories are the titles displayed horizontally across the top of
the STARMENU screen. Programs are listed vertically below each
category. This provides a simple scheme for organizing your soft-
ware.
To add or change categories or programs, select Program Edit from the
Settings Menu. You will see a screen similar to the STARMENU screen,
with categories shown across the top and a menu of programs dis-
played on the left. Pressing the left/right arrow keys highlights
different categories, which in turn changes the display of programs.
The up/down arrow keys change the highlighted program. To the right
is information about the currently highlighted program.
If you want to edit Catgeories, press C or click on the Category
heading at the very top of the screen. For Programs, press P or
click on the Programs heading.
The on-line help that is available by pressing F1 explains how to
add, change or delete Categories and Programs. The parameters you
specify for each program (Drive, Directory, etc.) are also explained.
There are two items that need additional explanation. These are:
A. Prompt
Some programs that you run can benefit from a command line prompt.
For example, suppose you use a text editor - Qedit is an example.
Q is what you would normally type at the DOS prompt to run Qedit.
And in STARMENU, you would normally enter Q on the Batch 1 line
to have STARMENU run it.
But Qedit will also directly load a file if you specify the name
after typing Q. For example, if you want to have Notes.Txt
loaded when you run Qedit, you would type Q NOTES.TXT at the DOS
prompt. You can do the same thing in STARMENU. The prompt line
is a message displayed to the user prompting them to enter some-
thing. For Qedit, you could use 'Enter name of file' as the
prompt. For STARMENU to know which batch lines are to display
the prompt, you must supply the .COM or .EXE extension for the
program being run. So for Qedit, your line would have Q.EXE.
When a user selects Qedit from the menu, a window will display
showing the prompt, permitting the user to enter what the prompt
is requesting.
B. Batch Files
When you specify the name of a program to run that is a .COM or
.EXE file, there is no problem. But specifying a batch file
(ending in .BAT) is another matter. Specifying the name of a
batch file without the .BAT extension will result in the program
running okay, but failing to return to STARMENU.
To remedy this, make sure that a batch file has the .BAT extension
specified in its file name.
III. SECURITY
STARMENU has a number of security features that are explained below.
It is important to understand that the Settings program controls all
of STARMENU's security. To guard against persons trying to run
Settings from the DOS prompt or from a shell such as Windows File
Manager, Settings may only be run from the Settings menu selection
in STARMENU. An attempt to run Settings outside of STARMENU will
result in STARMENU being run instead. To ensure that Settings cannot
be run by unauthorized persons from within STARMENU, you should
password protect the [*] menu - this is explained later in this
section.
A. STARMENU logon password (Miscellaneous Item 6)
In Miscelleous setting 6 you can activate logon password security
by entering a password here. Every time the logo screen is dis-
played, the password must be entered before access to STARMENU is
granted.
B. Logo Display (Miscellaneous Item 11)
The display of the logo is very important to security. This is
because the logo requires the entry of password and name. In an
environment where security is not activated, the default is for
the logo to not display.
When you activate any type of security, you should specify that
the logo is to be always displayed. Answering yes to this item
achieves this. What this means is the logo will appear when you
first run STARMENU, and everytime you exit a program and return to
STARMENU.
If you do not specify that the logo is to always display, then a
user must remember to select Quit to Logo on the [*] menu when they
are finished.
C. Security Sound (Miscellaneous Item 10)
If you specify D (Dragnet theme) of S (Siren), your PC will play one
of these if security is activated and an incorrect password is en-
tered. In an environment where different people work in the same
area, this can be a deterrent to unauthorized access because every-
one will know something is wrong when the sound is heard.
D. Logon With Name (Miscellaneous Item 6)
Answering yes to this will require the user to enter their name when
they use STARMENU. This works just like the password option, and
is dependent upon the display of the logo screen. Note that you
can require a name without a password, a password without a name,
or both.
Requiring a name is helpful if you have activated logging. In this
way you can get some idea of who is using the system.
If you want authorized persons to be able to use the system, you
must activate name logon.
E. Authorized Names (Miscellaneous Item 7)
Activating this limits who can use STARMENU. In order for this to
work, you must select User Names from the Settings Menu and add
the names and passwords of persons you want to have access to the
program.
When this is activated, a user will have to enter their name and
password when the logo is displayed. The name and password must
match one of those on the list you created.
F. Security Access (Miscellaneous Item 10)
When you activate this, only those programs for which you have
specified a security level can be run by users with the same or
higher level. For this to work, you have to activate Authorized
Name security, since this is the only way STARMENU will know what
security a specific user has.
