- INTRODUCTION
- =====
- The Lexis/Nexis Template lets you create a personal database from downloaded Lexis/Nexis
- information. This Template is designed to work with stories downloaded from Lexis/Nexis. You can
- also use it to search other types of information you download.
- You can use this Template as it is, or you can change it to better suit your needs. Modify the pre-
- defined reports, or create new reports as needed. With askSam you are free to work the way you
- choose.
- ===== INSTRUCTIONS =====
- To Import Lexis/Nexis Information
- askSam will import information you've downloaded from Lexis/Nexis.
- In Lexis/Nexis you can
- make a query and download the hits to a file on your computer. Then you can import this file
- into an askSam database.
- 1. Choose FILE -> NEW and select the "Create from Template" option.
- 2. Select Lexis/Nexis from the list of templates, enter a filename, and choose the OK button.
- 3. Choose FILE -> IMPORT. The Import Dialog Box appears.
- 4. Select LEXIS/NEXIS in the File Type field.

- 5. Change to the directory where your Lexis/Nexis text file or files are located. Select the file
- or files you wish to import and choose the OK button.
- Your Lexis/Nexis stories are imported.
- Note - The Lexis/Nexis Import filter is designed to import stories from Lexis or Nexis. If you are
- importing other types of information, you may need to use the TEXT ONLY import filter and
- manually define a Document Delimiter. Call our Tech Department if you have any questions.
- Automatic Field Recognition
- Once your information is imported, you can use askSam's Automatic Field Recognition to
- define fields. Fields are helpful if you wish to create reports, sort, or narrow the scope of a
- search. askSam can use any word followed by a colon as a field - for example HEADLINE,
- CATEGORY, DATELINE, etc.
- To use the Automatic Field Recognition function:
- 1. Choose TOOLS -> AUTOMATIC FIELD RECOGNITION
- 2. Select the ALL DOCUMENTS setting in step 2.
- 3. Choose the Generate List button.
- 4. A list of possible field names is displayed. Double click on the words you wish to use as
- fields and choose the OK button.
- To Search your Database for a Nexis Document
- Once your information is imported, you can use askSam's search features to locate specific
- items.
- Double Click on the "Search" Hypertext Link to search for a word or phrase.
- You can search from the Command Line. Press the ESC Key to access the Command
- Line.Type the word or words you want to locate and press ENTER.
- Note - The ACTIONS menu contains a variety of search options that you can use to search
- your Information.
- Reports in the Lexis/Nexis Template
- We have included several reports in this template. You can modify these reports or create new
- ones if you wish.
- The Headline List report displays a list of Headlines (provided a Headline field is available).
- The Search report lets you enter a word or phrase and retrieves the messages containing this
- word or phrase.
- You can run these reports by choosing TOOLS -> RUN REPORT and selecting the report you
- want to run.
- If a Report opens a second window, you can return to your original File by:
- - Double Clicking on any line in the Report (you return to the Document containing the
- information you clicked on).
- - Closing the window containing the Report output. (Choose FILE
- -> CLOSE or press
- CTRL+F4.)
- - Pressing CTRL+TAB to switch back to the previous window.
- To Delete this Document
- If you wish to delete this Document from your File (including the Hypertext Menu at the top of
- the Document), choose DOCUMENT -> DELETE while this Document is displayed. After
- deleting a Document you should PACK your file (choose FILE -> PACK).
