- Subject: packet and Apple IIC
-
- I am considering the purchase of a PK232 for use with my Apple IIC on packet/
- rtty/cw. I realize that I could use and communtication program with the
- interface but a specialized packet/rtty/cw program with features like split
- screen, etc. sure would be nice! Does anyone know of such a program or where
- I might get one? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

-
- Ah hem. I know the idea of reducing RFI through software sounds amusing,
- but there actually *is* something to this.
-
- Much of the RFI generated by many computers is affected by the level of CPU
- activity. Bus activity, memory activity, etc, all cease when the CPU halts.
- Most communications programs have plenty of excess CPU capacity, so if you
- simply halt the CPU when it's not doing anything, you can reduce the average
- RFI level considerably over a program that perpetually "busy waits" for
- something to happen.
-
- This is fairly easy to do in interrupt driven programs. Most "halt"
- instructions "fall through" (i.e., resume executing code) after an interrupt
- is taken, so they are really "wait for an interrupt" instructions.
-
- Unfortunately, on my machine at least, most of the remaining RFI is
- generated by the video monitor, and this is a function of the amount of text
- on the screen, not the level of CPU activity.

-
- The ARRL produces an "antenna Handbook". This deals with numerous
- different antennae of all sizes, of course the whole book would not be
- of intrest but many of the designs could help you.
-
- Also there is a magazine for 'monitoring enthusiasts' that is called
- Popular Communications which I highly reccomend. Every once in a while
- they deal with the problem that you speak of in either thier letters
- section or in a full blown article. You would do well to look into back
- issues of this publication.
-
- >Is attaching the radio antenna to the TV antenna assembly on the roof

-
- I am not exactly certain what the question here is....if you are asking
- if you could attach an antenna to the TV mast seperately, (for your SW
- reciever), then I dont believe that there would be any problem. If on
- the other hand you are talking about hooking up your SW to the TV
- antenna itself I would give you two items to consider.
- A) I suspect that many apartments use a booster/preamp to boost the
- antenna signal. If you hooked up your SW to this it is _possible_ that
- you could overload the sensitive SW reciever, at least causing poor
- reception and at most damaging the receiver.
- B) The range of frequencies that you are attempting to listen to is
- between 1.6 mcs and 30 mcs. TV antennas are cut for a resonant
- frequency FAR above this 30 mhz limit. In other words the TV antenna
- would not properly pick up the signals that you were trying to recieve.
- In addition (someone PLEASE correct me if I am wrong), the TV antenna is
- fed off of 72 ohm coax or twinlead whereas the SW normally takes 50 ohm
- between it and the antenna. The affect is not quite as bad as a dead
- short but it does severely limit the recieve capacity of your radio.
-
- In the absence of any other solutions you could run some copper wire
- around the inside of the edges of your celing and hook that into your
- radio. Not great but better than 'nuthin.
-
- I hope you really enjoy your shortwave.....I was given my first
- introduction to it many years ago when a friends father gave me an old
- Hallicrafters SX62 reciever. It weighed 200,000:-) pounds and went through
- 7f8 tubes quickly but I LOVED the ability to hear the whole world.

-
- No, you don't need a discrete-box TNC, but you need _something_. Almost
- all packet operation uses some form of HDLC framing, and you just
- can't do HDLC at any reasonable speed (or at all, sometimes) with
- anything BUT special hardware. If your computer is a PClone, though,
- you can buy or build an HDLC interface and then do the rest of AX.25
- in software, or do any higher layers too.
-
- HAPN (Hamilton, Ont. Area Packet Network) is a club whose TNC-card for
- the PC has been written up in ham radio magazine. There are also some
- commercial ones. Phil Karn's (ka9q) TCP/IP code supports HAPN and
- probably some other boards, so you can do TCP/IP and AX.25 using it
- or other software.
-
- For the record, I've proposed going to a non-HDLC layer 2, so you don't
- ever need a TNC, but it's still in the early talking stages (a802.txt
- on ucsd.edu's /hamradio repository).

- Not only that, frequently the EMI is dependent on what instruction
- sequence the computer is executing. I have an MFJ-1274 (sigh) that
- radiates right on one of the WEFAX frequencies, but ONLY when it
- is WEFAX mode!
-
- If the CPU is running a tight loop (which most personal computers spend
- 99% of their time doing), it will have a fundamental frequency
- with lots of harmonics. You may find carriers all over the place.
- Let it do something complex, and you end up with spread spectrum
- RFI - the noise comes out as white noise rather than carriers. Often
- this is enough to bring it below the noise level and you are no
- longer bothered. Try it sometime if you have an RFI'ing computer -
- you will notice that some RFI "ticks" every time you hit a keystroke.
- Other RFI is only present during disk activity. Some carriers
- disappear completely as soon as you run a program. Unfortunately,
- some (usually harmonics of the master clock) don't change at all.

-
- The quality has to be interpreted as a decimal value of an
- 8-bit-notation of the reliability of the corresponding link which
- says 255 is 100 % good ( no retries, no collisions ) 0 is 0% means
- no xfers possible.
- This quality has to be defined by the site-operator of the digi,
- depending on what he has monitored on this special link. In future
- releases of TheNet it might be calculated automaticaly. But this is
- mostly a problem of the available EPROM space.
-
- Every node multiplies the received quality marks with the quality to the
- next node so the quality mark decreases with increasing number of
- the nodes in between.

- Attention KPC-4 Owners:
-
- I recently obtained a correction notification from Kantronics,
- having to do with an error discovered during the production of all
- KPC-4 units prior to serial number 69489.
- If you have a KPC-4 below this serial number <#69489>, you
- should reverse the two capacitors C-40 and C-41, they have been
- installed backwards in all KPC-4s. The proper capacitors are 10mf,
- 65VDC electrolytics.
- you may send your unit back to Kantronics and
- they will correct the error at no charge to you. Should you
- choose this option, please drop a note in with your unit stating
- "Reverse C-40 and C-41".
- If you have any question concerning this problem you may contact
- Kantronics service department at 1-(913)-842-4476 for further
- information.

-
- A organization here involved in a chess tournament in Long Beach, CA needs
- communications assistance getting bits from their hotel to a GTE Telenet or
- ARPAnet node, the hotel wants and exhorbitant $150/day for a hookup (which
- is probably just a modem with a special connector on it, plus an arrangement

- So, they are looking at packet radio as an alternative.

- They have a licensed amateur among their members, so third party traffic is

- Subject: Repost of message.
-
- This was posted by me some days ago and came back due to the problems
- the internet had suffered the last few days.
- Here it is again - better late than never...
- --
- Yesterday we were facing a new problem that might cause a great deal of
- damage to the whole system of mail and bulletin forwarding using packet
- radio.
- Jim 4X1RU who performs as the gateway between Israel and the USA and also
- between Israel and Europe had noticed a station connecting to his BBS
- and acting unusual:
- The station used Jonathan N4QQ's call sign but from it's signal strength
- and character it was obvious that it was transmitted from somewhere in
- Europe. When Jim tried to talk with that imposter and asked him to identify
- himself he got 'virus' as a reply and the other station disconnected and
- disappeared.
- Luckily this time it didn't have chance to kill any message or do any other
- damage but it is clear that by just connecting and faking a forwarding
- session lots of mail can get lost - or faked.
- We changed the gateway to a polling only policy and all traffic is handled
- by means of reverse forwarding ,but this is not a solution.
- We must find a solution quickly to this problem by providing a solid and
- easy to use authentication method to be incorporated in the mail forwarding
- session or to change all together to a newer/safer protocol.
- I think that Phil once said that authentication over a tcp/ip link is easy
- to achieve.
-
- Any sujjestions ?

- No - it's not that much of a problem. I just posted it to point out

- I'm not impressed in general with the 1274. I find the instructions

- things in. On RTTY it seems to get more errors on receive that
- would seem reasonable.
-
- On WEFAX, you get a black and white picture (although they claim
- gray scale is coming with a new release). The software doesn't know
- how to synchronize, so you have to manually adjust the horizontal
- sync with the keyboard as a picture comes in. Not too terribly

- Subject: Looking for 2m packet transceiver
-
- I'm looking for a transceiver that may be used as a dedicated
- 2m packet unit. My preference is for something new and low cost.
- Minimal power is required since I'm less than 3 miles from the node.
- Any suggestions would be appreciated.
-
- Thanks in advance.

- Hi,
- I have two questions.
- I'm using KA9Q TCP-IP v. 871225.8 on a Mac Se; I would like to know if it is
- the last release. If not, how and where can I get the last one?
-
- I'm having trouble with the archives at RPICICGE; I downloaded some files
- .ARC (as NET_PC.ARC) and tried to unarc them with ARC520 but without success.
- I used an IBM AT connected to an IBM host (IBM 3081, vm/cms) with IRMA2 card,
- emulating an IBM 3278 terminal unit.
- Any help would be greatly appreciated.
- Many thanks

- >>HT and I have a modem! I was wondering if I really need a TNC!
- >No, you don't need a discrete-box TNC, but you need _something_.
-
- Three additional problems:
- - most modems are asynchronous NRZ with start/stop bits, and packet is
- syncrhonous HDLC NRZI, carring its clocking signals around with it.
- - And, the frequencies used are not Bell 212, they are Bell 202 compatible.
- Bell 202 was an obscure (except for packet, of course) half-duplex 1200
- bps standard.
- - If you use anything except FCC-blessed AX.25 (whatever that means)
- unattended operation is not allowed.
-
- I've got so many Bell-212 modems lying around that I've often been tempted
- to 'go asynch' and just put them on the air talking to each other at first.
- Having only one transceiver doesn't help me much in this regard, though.
-
- My Apple-cat modems can do Bell 103/202/212 and CCIT freqs stuff as well, and
- it already has a relay onboard (intended for turning on a cassette tape for
- an answering machine application, but it will work just fine for a PTT.
- [If I have to build cheap xmitters & stuff I will just put the PTT watchdogs
- in the rigs themselves.]
-
- Anyway, good luck.

- What I did for the "escape to DOS" function I added to an IBM PC PBBS was
- to generate a list of uniq random numbers. The computer would spit out the
- numbers sequencialy every time you accessed the protected feature
- you would have to answer with the next number in sequence. This master
- list of course could not be transmitted, but if you make a huge one it
- would be a long time before a new list was needed.
-
- Example:
-
-
- List= 54 23 12 10 52 (small number for simplicity)
-
- system A spits out 54
- system B must respond with 23
-
- Next time system A spits out 23
- System B must respond with 12
-
- System A really does not even have to spit out a number, but it helps
- B make sure that he is talking to A. This is done by making sure the
- number you are requested to answer to is the same one you answered with
- last time. Or even better, keep two lists and have both machines
- validate.

- I recommend that you obtain a copy of PTP (Packet Terminal Program)
- for your PC clone. It was written by N4PY and is available on Genie,
- and Compuserve (I think), or, I will make a copy for anyone who sends me
- a blank 5.25" or 3.5" diskette, and a SASE.
-
- A few of PTP's features include:
-
- o split screen operation - two or three screens
- o file transfer using XMODEM, ASCII, binary, and XPACKET (no crc's or other
- stuff, lets the HDLC hardware take car of that...),
- o fax support
- o multiple tnc "personalization" files
- o support for NTS traffic
- o support for RTTY and AMTOR
- o Net Master mode - allows multiconnect QSOs to be conducted with one station
- acting as the Net Master and relaying all packets received to each of the
- connected stations
- o indexed, 30 page manual
- o FREE!
-
-
- PTP is brought to you by WDCG - Wake [county] Digital Communications Group.

- A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO NETWORKING
- A PROPOSAL FOR STUDY - For the next level of Networking in Ohio
- (Originally presented at the 1988 Annual Meeting
- of the Ohio Packet Council, Inc.)
-
- By Hank Greeb, N8XX November 13, 1988
-
- ABSTRACT: This paper presents an alternative to the linear networks which
- we currently are using and building in Ohio and surrounding states. It
- overcomes the well documented "ALOHA" syndrome, where actual throughput of
- a linear, random access network, where nodes hidden (by either topography
- or distance) cannot hear each other and cause collisions. It builds upon
- concepts previously discussed at the ARRL Computer Networking Conferences.
- The effective throughput of the system would be close to the baud rate of
- the links involved.
-
- ===========================================================================
-
- Lemke, WB9MJN, has proposed a cellular network. (See "Cellular Area
- Coverage Transport Networks" by Donald V. Lemke, WB9MJN, in the proceedings
- of the ARRL 7th Computer Networking Conference). He proposes full duplex
- nodes on the 1250 MHz. band. Adacent nodes have inverted transmit and
- receive frequencies. It is assumed that the three directions would be
- handled by three pairs of frequencies for the three directions. Getting
- three transmitters to coexist with three receivers at a site might be a bit
- difficult, though it probably could be done.
-
- The fellows at AMSAT have a somewhat different idea - they use three or more
- receivers and a single transmitter at a site, hooked through a computer
- which receives AX.25 frames on four channels, and generates AX.25 frames
- on two output frequencies.
-
- What does a spacecraft have to do with terrestrial networking? Well, if we
- use such a functional module as a building block, let's see what kind of a
- network might be developed. We could have a node with three receiving
- channels (bands?) It would transmit on a fourth frequency. We could use a
- fifth port (used typically on a satellite for two-way telemetry and control
- functions) for connection to a LAN. Let's look at what a node in Fairfield
- might look like. It might receive from Brookville, Indiana, on one
- frequency, from Dayton, Ohio on a second frequency, and from Walton,
- Kentucky on a third. It would transmit on a fourth. If duplexers, could
- handle three receive frequencies and one transmit frequency (or if the
- frequencies were on separate bands?) the channel could be full duplex.
- However, the concept could work on a simplex mode, albeit at a slower rate
- and possibility for collisions and retries. We'd need a total of six
- frequencies to make the network, but spectrum should be available.
-
- >From a series of such sites we can build a hexagonal network with a path of
- redundancy around any node - so that the network would not fail if an
- individual node failed. (See Figure I for a part of such a network which
- could be put in place in Southern Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast
- Indiana.) Each node would be equipped with three receivers, one
- transmitter, and a computer designed to look like a multi-port TNC. We
- could use the receive and transmit modules from the Microsat modified for
- 51, 220 or 440 MHz (if we wanted to go simplex), or figure out if a 900 or
- 1250 MHz. duplexor could be made to work with three receivers and one xmtr
- on the same band. N6GN reports that VERY inexpensive modules are available
- for a 900 MHz. personal (CB-type) band in Japan - maybe these will be
- imported for use in the U.S. 902 MHz ham band? Or, maybe we could adapt
- the ever cheaper 900 MHz. cellular telephone strips for such use? We'd
- use another port for connection to a LAN frequency, using standard rigs
- (for now).
-
- What sort of computer might work? Would a PS-186 handle the job? Would
- the TAPR NNC work? How about TEXNET? Would the microcomputer being used
- for the Microsat project be an economical and otherwise practical choice?
- The Microsat is supposed to be able to handle at least 5 input ports and
- two output ports at 4800 BPS or higher, and the cost is supposed to be low.
- The advantage of the MICROSAT hardware is that it MUST be available by May
- 1989, because THE BIRD WILL FLY!! at that time.
-
- Vic, K1LT, et. al. (at the OPAC meeting) figured out that 6 frequencies
- would be needed, and the closest node transmitting on the same frequency
- would be twice as far as the desired node. This corroborates the asertion
- of Lemke in his paper.
-
-
- If simplex nodes could used, but the overall thruput of the system would be
- cut by at least 50%. Special attention would need be paid to turnaround
- time of tx to rx to be effective. Software would have to be designed to
- NOT transmit if a packet were being received by a node, nor to attempt to
- transmit data to a node when it was transmitting. All in all, it would be
- MUCH better to work full duplex. Possibly we could use pairs near 51/54
- MHz, near 221/224 MHz, and one duplex pair in the 440 MHz range. Other
- possibilities would be 6 frequencies strategically located in the 902 MHz
- band, or 1.3 GHz band, or ????? Getting started with equipment currently
- in use on 50/220/450 might allow us to develope software and prove the
- concept before we plunge into the unknown world of 900 or 1290 MHz.
-
- The job of the node controller would be to receive packets from the receive
- ports, and queue them for transmission (if simplex) or send them along to
- destination if duplex. It would need to allow for TX turn-on time,
- inasmuch as when the node were idle there would be no need for the
- transmitter to be running, and would have to be able to handle routing and
- alternative routings to handle congestion and/or failure of a node.
- A PS-186 or similar should do the job.
-
- The nodes could be connected to LANs, or merely act as a trunking switch.
- If desired, a BBS forwarding port could be added to eliminate BBS
- forwarding on the LAN frequency.
-
- The general idea was well received at the OPAC meeting, and we agreed to
- continue a dialogue on how best to improve and implement such a network.

- FIGURE I
- DIAGRAM OF THE PROPOSED NETWORK
-
- Here's a diagram of the network in part of southern Ohio, northern
- Kentucky, and southeast Indiana. Exact sites are not critical, as long as
- nodes can hear each other, and are approximately on the circumferernce of a
- circle. A few calls are listed, as the holders are currently active in
- packet and helping with networking in various ways. I did not
- intentionally ignore others who may be helping with the networking efforts.

- Packet Radio In Taiwan
-
- Wayne Wilson, WB8TSO, and Denton Bramwell, K7OWJ, have just returned from a
- trip to Taipei, Taiwan. While there, they operated a mini-DXpedition which
- included the first authorized packet-radio operation from Taiwan. Although
- operating time was very limited, they left behind a Heathkit HK-232 digital
- mode terminal unit, Heathkit SB-1400 HF transceiver and Heathkit SB- 1000
- linear amplifier for future use by the China Radio Association club

- New TexNet Software RELEASE
-
- The Texas Packet Radio Society (TPRS) announced a new release (Version 1.2)
- of the TexNet software which includes new commands and functions. "CQ @
- odename" allows users to ragchew with unknown users via the network.
- Multiple Packet Message Servers (PMS) and Weather Information Servers (WXI)
- units can be installed and routed to via the network. "M @ nodename"
- routes the user automatically to that node's PMS. If the node does not
- have a PMS or WXI unit installed, an information message is returned to the
- user. "W @ nodename" connects the user to the weather information server
- at the named node.
-
- A default PMS and WXI is also allowed at each node so that a user need
- enter only one letter to get routed to the "local" PMS or WXI. The
- defaults for both functions can be separate units. One hard drive
- sub-system at a single node can serve both PMS and WXI functions. For WXI
- messages, the node with the WXI system must be programmed for the desired
- weather products.
-
- The TexNet source code is TEXNET.ARC. The object code is MAIN12.HEX and the
- information for customizing the object code EPROM is MAIN12.DOC. All of
- the code and documentation may be downloaded from CompuServe's HamNet.
- Questions should be addressed to Bill Wade, WD5HJP, or to TPRS at PO Box
- 831566, Richardson, TX 75083-1566.

- W0RLI PBBS VERSION 8.09
-
- Version 8.09 of the W0RLI PBBS software is now available from the usual
- sources. This version fixes the bug in the M command when used with
- distribution lists. (Note from N8XX: Current version is 9.00)
-
- NEW Xerox PBBS code release
-
- A new version of the Xerox PBBS code has been released that supports BIDs
- and the SID. The code is fully compatible with current versions of both
- the WA7MBL and W0RLI PBBS software. The release now contains the W9ZRX BBS
- list.
-
- If you would like a copy of the code, please send two 8-inch disks with a
- self-addressed, stamped disk-mailer to John Bennett, N4XI, 5805 Whitethorne
- Dr, Evansville, IN 47710. Note that two disks are required and source code
- is no longer being released.
-
- Please be sure that the return disk-mailers are suitable and sufficient
- return postage is included (check with the post office before shipping to
- be sure you include enough postage). As with previous releases, packages
- received failing to meet these requirements will not be processed.

- RiverLAN FALL CONFERENCE
-
- One of the more important aspects of packet-radio operation is the
- opportunity for packet-radio operators to get together to discuss the many
- facets of their interests and to obtain answers to questions and concerns.
- In the fall of 1986, a band of 12 packet-radio operators in the La Crosse,
- Wisconsin and Winona, Minnesota area got together to discuss such things.
- The interest was so high and the excitement so great that they decided to
- get together every six months and call their meeting a "packet conference."
- The gang found that each and every conference attracted more and more hams
- interested in packet radio. The most recent conference, the RiverLAN
- Packet Conference, was held on October 22 and attracted 35 packet-radio
- enthusiasts from as far away as the Twin Cities in Minnesota and Milwaukee,
- Wisconsin.
-
- If you have never heard Carl Estey, WA0CQG, talk about amateur satellites
- in the context of "90-minute whizzers" and "half-day hummers," then you
- have missed a real treat. Carl gave an excellent and well-organized
- presentation on digital communications from spark gap to packet radio and
- emphasized, in an easy to understand offering, satellite packet-radio
- communication. Carl discussed the current OSCAR 13 as well as future
- satellites including PACSAT, which will provide store-and- forward
- capabilities similar to current PBBS operation.
-
- TCP/IP has been a subject of interest to RiverLAN packet-radio operators
- for quite a while. Dan Frank, W9NK, came for a follow- up presentation to
- the last conference on the subject of TCP/IP. Many of our regional
- packet-radio operators are attempting to implement TCP/IP in conjunction
- with the current NET/ROM network and Dan provided assistance to those
- attempting to get up and running and how to set up for forwarding on the
- NET/ROM network.
-
- For those not interested in TCP/IP, an alternative workshop was offered on
- general packet-radio discussions. Among the many topics discussed in this
- session was the subject of interfacing TNCs with various computers, for
- example, the possibility of AEA plug-in software for the Commodore 64 and
- PK-232 being used with other TNCs (the conclusion was that it could not be
- done).
-
- Also discussed in this session was a drawback of the current WA7MBL PBBS
- software (Version 5.12): the default "private" messages. In general, the
- conclusion was that it is sometimes interesting and informative to "read
- the mail" meant for others and valuable tips can often be found by doing
- so.
-
- Another topic was trying to keyboard outside of the local LANs. A proposal
- was put forth to attempt to develop a user data base with such things as
- the time a station is in operation, frequency of operation, nearest
- digipeater, home PBBS, etc. No specific methodology of implementing such a
- database was proposed, however.
-
- These concurrent sessions went well beyond their time limitations.
- Fortunately, they were the last sessions of the day. It seems that the
- discussions and interest dictate longer sessions!
-
- Also discussed at the conference were a presentation by Bob Dubke, K0SIR,
- on using the WD0GNK CD-ROM Callbook feature; local issues, including an
- update on the RiverLAN digipeaters and discussion on Skywarn and packet
- aadio; a professionally produced video presentation offered by Lyle Vogt,
- KA0UDL, on the Minnesota Ham and Computer Fest; and a presentation by WAPR
- representative Dan Bolander on "Networking...Where Do We Go from Here."
-
- Of course, one of the other fine opportunities for "talking packet radio"
- was during the lunch hour in which participants had the opportunity to
- interact, learning what others were doing and informing others of exciting
- things they were doing. As usual, the conference was too short. Many
- would like to have had more time, but then, that is why they will probably
- come back to the next RiverLAN Packet Conference in April 1989.
-
- If your local LAN has not considered sponsoring a regional packet-radio
- conference, take a cue from the RiverLAN group and do it now. The interest
- is high and the opportunities so few that groups should seize upon the
- chance to sponsor a regional forum where issues, developments and questions
- can be addressed.

- HK-232 TNCs (all modes of the PK-232 are supported except for FAX and
- NAVTEX). The program uses the TNC's "host mode" to provide on-screen
- status information and separates incoming data, including monitored data,
- into separate "virtual terminal screens" that are displayed on demand. The
- program also automatically merges lines which were split in two when the
- transmitting station failed to enter a carriage return and automatically
- word-wraps. Lynn Taylor, WB6UUT, wrote the program and to obtain a
- registered copy, contact Lynn at 463 Myrtle St, Laguna Beach, CA 92651.

- HF Gateways use TexNet
-
- The Texas TexNet network is being used to help tie different HF networks
- together. This is very close to the original ARRL concept of a "teleport,"
- which is a regional-sized group implementing multiple stations on various
- HF frequencies to allow a region to have solid connections to other
- regional teleports during varying propagation conditions. Since the
- high-speed network makes it possible for any of the HF gateway stations in
- Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth or San Antonio to directly connect, this allows
- us to pass messages between different networks very easily. In the
- teleport definition, the individual stations were to be within quick VHF
- access of each other so there would be minimum delay in passing messages
- between the different nets. TexNet has allowed us to implement this
- concept over a 220-mile long "region." This activity will be fine-tuned as
- more experience is gained with it.
-
- The participating stations are, as follows:
-
- KB5PM Austin 10.149 net
- WA5MWD Murphy 10.149 net
- WY5J Murphy 14.111 net
- WA5QZI Seguin 14.109 net
- KA5LZQ Rockport No HF net
-
- (KB5PM operates part-time at night and WY5J has some liaison to a Texas
- 40-meter net.)
-
- The stations are available to all, but it is recommended that network users
- from distant nodes not try to DX these mailboxes through the network.
- These stations spend most of their time relaying messages. There are other
- stations in each area which primarily provide user access to the network.
- You might feel like connecting to one of these stations to try out TexNet,
- and that is okay. However, please remember that each connection may delay
- other messages from getting through.
-
- We are having some problems with the lack of a good Layer Three interface.
- This is a problem which all network designers have had to work around and I
- hope a better solution can be found in the future. If provided, this could
- allow different networks to connect together much more easily.

- Attention AMPRNet address coordinators, it's that time of year again

- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Date: 20 Nov 88 20:25:44 GMT
- From: ampraddr%ucsd.edu@ucsd.edu (the Automatic Hosts.Net Program)
- Subject: Attention AMPRNet address coordinators, it's that time of year again
-
- Yes, it's time for me to make up the master hosts.net database again, so
- if you'd take a few moments to send me your hosts.net file for the areas
- you coordinate, I'd appreciate it. It would be extremely nice if you'd
- follow the format below, since I'm using an extremely stupid awk script
- to handle this stuff, and things that don't follow the format and bomb
- the awk script are likely to get dumped in the bitbucket and then I have
- to go rescue it by hand. Arrgh. As if I weren't busy enough already.
-
- At the beginning, I'd like to have
- 1. Header line: '# ",your subnet, a tab, your name, a tab, callsign,
- a tab, and your coordination area.
- 2. the coordinator contact information as you would have it
- published, as fewer than 10 comment lines.
-
- Following that, one entry line for each registered address:
- 44.1.2.3^Ihostname
- or
- 44.1.2.3^Ihostname^I#comment
-
- Notes: ^I is a SINGLE TAB CHARACTER. The line must NOT be longer
- than 80 characters with tabs set every 8 columns, must begin in column
- one, and can be in mixed case. Leading zeros on host numbers look neat
- but confuse a LOT of software, so they shouldn't be used. Also, I'm
- going to store these in the registered ampr.org. domain, so you don't
- have to put that part of the hostname in (i.e., 'WB6CYT' instead of
- 'WB6CYT.AMPR.ORG', please. And please use 'pc.wb6kdt' rather than
- 'pc.wb6kdt.ampr.org', of course.)
-
- Additionally, comment lines may be included, and are signified as such
- by having a '#^I' (sharp,TAB) as the first two characters on the line.
- Again, no more than 80 characters on a line, PLEASE, because this stuff
- has to pass through BITNET mailers which think they're still punching holes
- in Hollerith cards. BTW, if the file gets too big, I may have to elide the
- comment lines, so don't put your life story or the bylaws of you local
- ham club in there. Remeber that decorticated IBM-PKlones have to read
- through this stuff in less than a day, eh?
-
- I'd hope to get this all collected SOON, so that I can publish it around
- the first of the year.
-
- Mail your file to 'ampraddr@ucsd.edu' (Bitnet: AMPRADDR@UCSD,
- uucp: ucsd!ampraddr) where it will be automagically stored and
- processed.
-
- BTW, if you have a neighboring coordinator who does not have network
- access, it would be incredibly kind of you to mail his info in for him,
- or perhaps such isolated people could mail me an IBM-PC 5-1/4" floppy
- with the address info on it if they have no other way to send the info.
-
- Thanks one and all for your cooperation!

- I am working on a project to send a weather radar picture a "local"
- (35 air miles away) TV station to our Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
- The distance, terraine, power requirements, and expense, will make
- traditional ATV impractical. I was thinking of of using a computer
- at the radar site to digitize and crunch the radar image into a binary
- file that could be relayed via packet and then reassembled at the EOC.
- Several recent articles about sending pictures with packet have mentioned
- software such as "ComputerEyes" and the use of graphic digitizer cards
- like those used for desktop publishing. Does anyone out there in netland
- have any suggestions regarding how I can digitize a composite high-res
- video picture and recover it on the receiving end? Cost is obviously
- a major concern since I may be the main sponsor of this project. If
- all works out, I will install a low-power ATV transmitter at our EOC
- to retransmit the pictures allowing our local SKYWARN participants to
- receive the pictures with a simple downconverter instead of needing
- a computer.

- The board of TAPR (USA) have decided not to market modem PCBs on my
- behalf. If you want to know the reason, ask TAPR.
- However, you CAN obtain PCBs from two sources. One of course is direct
- from me. This really is NO problem. Readers of who know me will attest
- that, unlike many "proper" organisations who simply ignore letters, all
- my correspondence is dealt with the same day it arrives.
- The second source is: Pac-Comm Packet Radio Systems Inc, 3652 W. Cypress
- Street, Tampa, Florida 33607-4916 Tel: (813) 874-2980. Thanks Gwyn.
- A full description of the modem appears in the 7th ARRL Computer
- Networking Conference Proceedings, pages 135-140, and is the ONLY
- deliverable item of hardware to feature in this issue.
- Let me reiterate. The modem has two outstanding advantages:
- *** 1. It works. 2. It's available. ***
- The second batch of 100 PCBs sold out in 28 days, and the 3rd is on its
- way. Groups around the world are rapidly taking up up this real advance
- in packet traffic movement to improve their systems.
- Just one example; Nord><Link, who brought you TheNet, have taken 25 of
- the 9600 baud modem PCBs to re-vitalise the German Network. They need
- fruit today - not jam tomorrow. So do I!
- Perhaps readers could post/flood this bulletin on their BBSs etc.

-
- Has the ARRL made up an award: " ***CONNECTED TO ALL STATES " (CAS) for
- packet operators? It would probably require that you connect to at
- least one station in every state, without using digipeaters or nodes to
- relay your signal. It would be like the "Worked all States" award.
- Most of the connections would obviously need to be made on HF. Guess
- you'd need to get QSL cards, or would computer printouts be trusted
- (use a Honor system, trust that no-one lies). Question: would we
- accept connecting to BBS's, nodes, digipeaters or would we want
- connections to live operators only? What about busy signals (it is a
- contact of sorts, but if they're allowed, it could encourage a pile-up
- on a rare station. So, no busy signals would be accepted.)

- Right now, I'm using terminal emulator software, but would like something

- As far as I know, TAPR has never supported the Mac version.

- The current development is being done here in the Bay Area. For

-
-
- Announcing "BB" (Bulletin Board)
- --------------------------------
- These is a new BBS program available for the IBM PC/XT/AT/PS2 or compatible
- series of computes. It's called "BB" and was written by H. Roy Engehausen
- (AA4RE). It is available for FREE and source code IS available (also free).
- Roy also wrote the MBBIOS COM port drives used by MBL and RLI systems.
-
- I am acting as a distribution point for ROY so he can spend more time writing
- enhancements.
-
- BB is a TRUE multi-user BBS program
- -----------------------------------
- On existing MBL and RLI systems you must run DESQview or DoubleDOS and have
- multiple copies running to allow multiple users to connect. Even then
- you are limited to only ONE user per TNC.
-
- BB removes these restrictions:
-
- 1) You do not need DESQview or DoubleDOS, BB contains its own internal
- multitasking executive. Each additional user only requires 12K bytes
- of memory.
-
- 2) BB does not limit you to ONE user per TNC. BB allows multiple users
- on each TNC at the same time. You could have several users connected
- to each TNC and still forward all at the SAME TIME.
-
- Extra Features
- --------------
- BB includes a built-in text editor so you can edit messages and
- forward files without interrupting any users or taking the BBS down.
-
- BB uses windowing on your terminal, you have a monitor window, a
- connect window and a operator window.
-
- TNCs supported
- --------------
- BB uses "host mode" to communicate with the TNC. You must replace the
- EPROM in your TNC (some TNCs have it built in already) in order to use BB.
- Host Mode allows the computer to maintain strict control of the computer
- to TNC link. The TNC never sends anything to the computer with out the
- computer asking (polling) for it first.
-
- BB supports the following TNCs:
-
- - TNC-1 - Requires WA8DED TNC1 EPROM installed.
- - TNC-2 or clone - Requires WA8DED TNC2 or NORD<>LINK EPROM installed.
- The NORD<>LINK EPROM does seem to work better.
- - PC-1XX card - Handled by MBBIOS and BB
- - PK-232 - Host mode built in already
- - PC*PA - Handled by MBBIOS and BB
- - PK87 - Use PK87DED EPROMS or its built in Host Mode.
-
-
- How to get BB
- -------------
- I am distributing BB via diskette mailers. To get it send me a diskette
- mailer with the necessary number of FORMATTED 5 1/4" 360K diskettes. Include
- the necessary return postage and a return mailing label. Do not send us any
- money, mailers received without the return postage (STAMPS) will not be
- returned. EPROMs will NOT be burned. BB requires DOS 3.0 or higher.
-
- I am distributing the following packages:
-
- Number
- of Disks Description
- -------- ---------------------------------------------------
- 2 BB programs, BB documentation and MBBIOS 3.2
- 3 Source code for BB (Turbo Pascal V5) and MBBIOS 3.2
- 1 WA8DED TNC1 and WA8DED TNC2 Host Mode code (you burn the EPROM).
- 1 NORD<>LINK TNC2 and PK87DED Host Mode code (you burn the EPROM).

- Subject: On-Line Packet Call Book
-
- Several have asked me to repost the following on the WA4ONG REQQTH
- procedure:
-
- --------------- WA4ONG's REQQTH Procedure ---------------
-
- - Have you ever worked a station for a new state and found out the
- operator is not in your call book?
-
- - Have you ever had a QSL returned from the Post Office indicating the
- party has moved with no forwarding address?
-
- - Is your call book more than a year old and out of date?
-
- If you answered 'Yes' to any of the above, read this posting.
-
- WA4ONG has a database of addresses for U.S. Amateurs that can be tapped
- with a simple packet message. All you do is send a packet message in
- accordance with a standard format and the address will show up on your
- home PBBS within a few days. Most get overnight answers. The procedure
- is called "WA4ONG's Request QTH" and the reply will state "From the
- 1988 Buckmaster Publishing CD-ROM Directory (c) 1988."
-
- Follow the following steps:
-
- 1. Connect to your home PBBS that is set up for auto forwarding.
-
- 2. At the BBS> prompt enter:
-
- BBS> S REQQTH @ WA4ONG (ENTER OR RETURN)
-
- 3. At the subject prompt enter:
-
- Subject: KD5VU @ KB5PM
-
- The 1st call is the call sign you need the address on, the call sign
- after the @ is your home BBS or where you want WA4ONG to send the
- reply. WA4ONG's station will read your call sign off the packet header
- and reply to the specified BBS.
-
- 3. At the enter text prompt enter:
-
- /EX or Control-Z
-
- This ends the message and sends the message
-
- 4. Note there is no text at all! This is important, do not enter text!
-
- If you want to request addresses for more than one station, just
- separate the call signs by commas (KD5VU,N6PHJ @ KB5PM). There is a limit
- of about four or five depending on the PBBS system being used by your
- home BBS.
-
- Try it! It works and sure was a help to me in getting the right
- addresses on the final stations for my Packet WAS #5.
-
- To avoid several inquires, the WA4ONG only addresses U.S. Hams. I do
- not think the REQQTH supports DX addresses. Sorry about that! Also, I
- have not tested it with Zip codes in the address. I suspect zips will
- not make it.
-
- Caution: This does not seem to work on TexNet, as TexNet assigns the
- Nodal callsign to the header and the reply will be addressed to the
- nodal call @ your home BBS.
