-
- I am interested in knowing if TAPR is still in business.
-
- Back in July, I sent them a check to renew my membership and to order
- some firmware and the tcp/ip disks. I have heard nothing from them
- since. I sent a follow up letter in September and still heard
- nothing, but I did get my cancelled check back recently, so there is
- some form of life at their address. I haven't tried phoning as yet,
- as I'm sure they are always busy in handling requests.
-
- Does anyone know their status?

- The current packet protocols don't seem very well suited to large

- It appears that after approx. a year and a half, the light(s) in my Kenwood

- least the rig works!
- The question may be obvious: Does anyone know exactly what bulb ("bub" as we
- say in "5" land!) / lamp to use in the 4100? Mfgr & Part #? Not having a
- service manual in hand, I thought I'd try here first. How's about a name and/or

-
- Overall, I'd give this rig an "8" based on 1 - 10.

- The usual solution to this problem is installing a fullduplex digi.
- But this is for a much higher hardware expense occupying 2 frequencies
- instead of one but giving only the throuput of 1 frequency ( channel )
-
- But there is an other solution. And it's established on other sites
- ( e.g. on ships trying to communicate via orbital satelites ) which is
- called DAMA ( demand assigned multiple access ).
-
- And furthermore there is a solution underways for Packet Radio by
- the german NORD><LINK group. I described a corresponding protocoll
- version of DAMA in the september issue of the german PR magazin.
-
- One highlight : no new protocol elements ( syntax ) are required
- and the version is compatible with the usual AX.25 L2.
- So both versions could work together on the same frequency,
- but channel troughput increases as more stations are turning over
- to the new version.
-
- There might be a DAMA version of NORD><LINK's TheNet be available in
- the near future, but the biggest problem is the lack of EPROM space
- for the TNCs as all of the available 32kB are used right now.
-
- I'll let you know when there's something new.

-
- LATEST DEVELOPMENTS ON
- ANTENNAS IN BOULDER
-
- (December 9, 1988)
-
- Here are the latest developments concerning antennas in unincorporated
- Boulder County. The litigants, "Doc" Evans, NQ0I, and Tim Holzheimer,
- N6DIY, have retained the law firm of Sherman and Howard. The Attorney
- of Record is now Rob Youle (pronounced like Yule). Bob Neece, K0KR,
- was instrumental in the negotiations that finally netted this firm.
-
- An important point noted by K0KR is that none of the attorneys on this
- case are Amateurs, nor do they have any particular interest in Amateur
- radio. This is an advantage because it is difficult for lawyer/hams
- to view such a case with the requisite professional detachment.
- Elements of the case can be overlooked because lawyer/hams become too
- emotionally involved with the issues at hand. K0KR is a lawyer/ham
- and frankly admitted that Sherman and Howard have viewed things in
- ways that he had not because his objectivity had been affected.
- Sherman and Howard's interest in this is strictly centered about the
- law.
-
- In order to properly prepare their opening brief, Sherman and Howard
- have requested, and been granted, an extension. The opening brief
- will be filed on December 9th. The County then has 30 days in which to
- file a reply brief. After that, the litigants have 30 more days in
- which to file a reply brief to the County's brief (literally a reply
- to the reply). Rob Youle estimates that the hearing probably will not
- occur until next August.
-
- Sherman and Howard believe that this case will have National
- repercussions and will affect antenna legislation elsewhere in the
- U.S. In Boulder County, two Amateurs -- KG0E Mack Thompson and
- WB0NIA, Lewis Ladwig -- may be forced to substantially reduce, or
- possibly remove entirely, their antenna installations based on the
- complaints of two people. KG0E recently increased his total antenna
- height from 64 feet to 100 feet (the 64 foot height existed prior to
- any of the latest trouble). He is retired and lives on a 5 acre
- parcel abutting a commercial farm to the east. Based on the
- complaints of two individuals the County has ruled that his antenna
- must be lowered to 50 feet in height. The complainants live
- one-quarter mile further southeast of KG0E and complained that the
- antenna "ruined" their view of Long's Peak to the northwest. The
- hearing for WB0NIA will be held on December 22. He lives in the same
- neighborhood and currently has a 60 foot installation which also
- pre-dates any of the latest legal lunacy. Already El Paso County
- (which contains Colorado Springs) is citing Judge Weinshienk's ruling
- in its attempt to place restrictions on antennas similar to Boulder
- County's, although somewhat more flexible. Two Amateurs in
- Breckenridge, Colorado (Summit County) have been denied permission to
- install wire dipoles. In what is probably an unrelated case near
- Merced, California, an Amateur living outside the city limits has been
- declared to be within the city's "sphere of influence" and been
- ordered to remove his antenna system based upon a single complaint.
-
- The firm of Sherman and Howard has agreed to provide its services for
- a maximum fee of $10,000. Actual costs will be significantly more, but
- the law firm has agreed to not bill the litigants for monies in excess
- of $10,000. This is not uncommon among large law firms involved in
- significant cases; they feel that the prestige of winning the case
- will ultimately pay these costs in increased business.
-
- In order to retain Sherman and Howard, the Boulder Antenna Legal
- Defense Fund (BALDF) donated approximately $7,000, $2,000 of which was
- loaned to BALDF by the Boulder Amateur Radio Club, and the balance was
- made up by the litigants. This loan will be repaid as soon as
- possible, as funds are received by BALDF.
-
- In keeping with BALDF policy, an accounting is included that carries
- through 30 September 1988. Added to this should be $7,000 expended in
- October.

- Lets be realistic Brian. Personally I define Worked All States as an
- achievement award not a contest. It is an award for working fellow
- hams. It is suppose to be quality not quanity, even though it requires
- 50 different states. It seems to me it is suppose to try to expand
- who we talk to. Now, is it anyones falut that people turn it into
- a contest of who done this or I've done that.
-
- Now over to the packet side, I have to agree with Phil about trying
- to contest over packet...like it was pointed out, contest are short
- bursts of information...very similar to lets say a weather net or
- so on.....now that's not packets strong point by any means...
- how many weather spotting nets do you see use packet ? Not that I have
- seen and can equal a voice net....so packet works well (didn't say great -
- please no flames {-: ) for exchanging longer messages, becuase of the
- amount of time it takes to set up a point-to-pint connection. This
- is the strong point of any computer dtata oriented protocol...becuase
- that what they were designed for to a certain extent.
-
- Probably the answer would be ---- get another channel off away from
- the normal packet operators who have enough retrys as is and let the
- contesters inflict collisions among each other.

- Ah, Brian, but the League *does* allow just such impersonal connects
- to count for Field Day. Or at least, they haven't said that they don't.
- I guess you have to have real human communication for WAS, but not

- Personally, I'm either going to stay off packet next FD, or type a

-
- The Kantronics KA-Node is very similar to the NET/ROM in function, but
- has a different look to it. Kantronics added this feature to all of there
- packet modems. You connect to the persons KA-Node as you would normally
- connect to a NET/ROM or another packet user (You may digipeat to one) Once
- connected the system will give you a small hello message with options.
- You may view the stations just heard (Jheard) as well as just the other
- KA-Nodes just heard (Nheard). To connect to another user or KA-Node, simply
- Connect as you would from a NET/ROM or though digi's if needed.
-
- The benifit to the Kantronics system are several:
- o With connecting to KA-Nodes along your path, acknolegements are sent
- locally between 2 Nodes, NOT the entire path.
- o Everyone who owns a Kantronics packet modem has a KA-Node built in.
- This allows for a larger network without additional expense.
- o You do not have to dedicate the modem to just a KA-Node, you can still
- use it normally while someone else uses your KA-Node.
-
- I have used a Kantronics KPC-2 for over a year and I have been VERY pleased
- with it's preformance. There are many other benifits to the Kantronics modems.
- If you want more information or help, please let me know.

- Putting a radio inside a PC has a lot of advantages, but it may be
- awfully difficult given the hardware constraints. The inside of a
- PC is within the RF shield, so the RF board would need to be
- incredibly well shielded to keep crud out, as well as keep its own
- signals in. This would probably require a tight "sandwich"
- package taking up one or more slots -- probably more.
-
- Given that constraint (and the possibiliity of building a PC enclosure
- where there's some kind of internal shielding between one area and
- the rest?), integrating the radio into the PC makes a lot of sense.
- You can build a much better syntheseizer, for example, if your two
- or three loops are not constrained to a simple mechanical tuning
- arrangement but instead are optimized for program control. (This
- is because current synths typically have a narrow and wide loop,
- for fine and coarse tuning, while a better deal would have two
- loops that both change at the right time.)
-
- But I haven't seen it yet. A PC TNC card seems the closest. Or the
- IC-781, a super-costly xcvr with built-in processing, of sorts.
- (Hmmm, a PC-card RF deck might dupe the 781 functions more cheaply.)

- The programs are:
-
- * The multiuser BBS "The Box" version 1.5 which can be found in pub/thebox
- The program is stored in self-unarcing .exe files so it will not be
- possible to extract the source files using the arc program.
-
- * The multiscreen terminal program "Turbo Packet" version 2.5a which is
- stored as pub/turbopr.arc
- This program will inevitably give you an excellent opportunity to brush

-
- The programs are also available in Europe with anonymous ftp, namely
- from sics.se (192.16.123.90) and from kolvi.hut.fi (128.214.3.7).
-
- I have not tested the programs yet, so good luck!

- Subject: DAMA
-
- Several request for more info about DAMA arrived here, but some
- responses from me bounced so I'll try it this way
- ( e.g. one should go to:
-
- <ames!pacbell!att!ihlpa!ihnp4!ihopa!jdu%pasteur.Berkeley.EDU@jade.b
-
- sorry, no chance to find such a way back )
-
- But maybe others are interested to, so this might be not only bothering.
-
- Here's a short overview about DAMA ( demand assigned multiple access ),
- a method which might solve our hidden stations problem of digipeater
- operation without the need of a duplex digi.
-
- A DAMA net node ( usualy ) works with a connection oriented protocol.
- All stations who are using an uplink are known to the digi as long
- as they are working via this digi. In an established DAMA version
- for communication sattelites the connect requests are made in a sloted
- ALOHA method, but a simple SABM in CSMA would work as well.
- The first successfull transfer of such a connect-request includes
- the calling station to a userlist ( similar to the userlist of TheNet ).
- From that time on the user nodes are polled by the central node where
- the polls include the ACKs ( RR# ) for the received data frames
- ( I frames in (A)X.25 ). If there would only be idles ( RR# responses )
- the polling frequency drops continuasly down to a lower limit. But a
- former idling station would get highest priority back as soon as there
- is at least one I-frame response. As long as the channel capacity is not
- fully required the poll frequency will not reach the lower limit. But
- as channel access requests increase the amount of unneccessary polls
- to idle stations falls to the minimum. So the scheduling overhead of
- the network system decreases with increasing amount of data to
- transfer.
-
- So what's the advantage:
- Even week stations will get their chance to work via the digi. No new
- hardware is required. All protocol elements of AX25 could be used
- and the usual AX25 L2 and DAMA AX25 L2 could work on the same frequency
- at the same time.
-
- disadvantage:
- someone has to do the job of realization ( of course ).
- But we're working on it. As I mentioned earlier the biggest problem
- is the lack of free EPROM space in the TNCs as TheNet eats all of the
- available 32K.
-
- A full description of an AX25-DAMA version is printed in detail in
- the september issue of PR-INFO, the german Packet-Radio-magazine.
- Some very good contributions about DAMA could be found in
- TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATION of the IEEE.

- Subject: Introducing CONVERS mode for TheNet
-
- Hello PR world \n
-
- several ideas arrived here how the features of TheNet could be
- upgraded or what new features should be added. As mentioned in
- earlier postings there was allways the lack of free EPROM space.
-
- But here is a special new solution:
-
- CONVERSATIONAL mode for TheNet
-
- This CONVERS mode overcomes a lack of packet radio which you don't
- find in other parts of HAM radio : buildung groups of several HAMs
- all talking to each other.
-
- And this is how it works:
- You connect the CONVERS node via the usual CONNECT commands of
- TheNet and get the message:
- ( from the Brunswick digi in this example )
-
- BS:DB0FC> Connected to BSCONV:DB0FC-2
-
- BSCONV:DB0FC-2> Mini-Convers. Type /HELP for help.
-
- Follow this instruction, type /HELP and you'll get:
-
- Commands may be abbreviated. Commands are:
- /? Print help information
- /BYE Terminate the convers session
- /CHANNEL n Switch to channel n
- /EXIT Terminate the convers session
- /HELP Print help information
- /INVITE user Invite user to join your channel
- /MSG user text Send a private message to user
- /QUIT Terminate the convers session
- /WHO List all users and their channel numbers
- /WRITE user text Send a private message to user
- ***
-
- To find out who's just working via this node you follow this
- instructions and enter /who ( upper or lower case or abbreviated )
-
- you'll might geht this response
-
- User Circuit Channel
- DD1HL HH2:DL0TEL 0
- DK4EG BS:DB0FC 0
- DC6QE GOE:DB0FE 16
- DK5AH GOE:DB0FE 16
- DF3AV BS:DB0FC 0
- ***
-
- This means by default you'll allways be connected to virtual channel 0.
- Up to 255 virtual channels might be established on one CONVERS node.
- It doesn't matter from what uplink node you connect the CONVERS node.
- As lang as you stay on your channel you'll get informed by the
- CONVERS node if new users signon to this channel:
-
- *** DL8ZAW signed on.
-
- and you'll get all messages typed by all users of your channel
- ( but you won't get back your own message ! Why should you ? ) :
-
- <DL8ZAW>: Hello to everyone on this channel
-
- But you can send messages to only one user of the channel as well
- by typing
-
- /MSG DK4EG have you got my new firmware release in the meantime ?
-
- so on my screen I'll see:
-
- <*DL8ZAW*>: have you got my new firmware release in the meantime ?
-
- The * sign tells me this was a private message. And you found out
- all messages preceded by a / ( slash ) sign are directed to the
- command interpreter of the CONVERS node.
- Furthermore you may include other HAMs of other channels to your
- channel by inviting them to join your group.
-
- By means of the multiconnect features of TheNet you could
- be signed on to 16 different QSOs, each with ( theoretical )
- unlimited number of users.
-
- So what do you need if you decided to install the CONVERS mode at your
- site?
-
- Just add a further TNC2 ( clone ) to your node via the diode matrix
- on RS232 side and plug in the new firmware. You don't need the
- modem on the TNC board if you omit the radio channel.
- At our Brunswick digi we have installed 6 TNCs via the RS232 side
- without any trouble yet.
-
- The CONVERS firmware is derived from TheNet sources by replacing
- most user command parts. It was written by Frank ( DL8ZAW )
- and the firmware is running here under Betatest conditions in
- severals nodes on different sites.
- It shall be available to everyone who might be interested just
- for the charge of copying and handling expense. As soon
- as there are no new bug reports for some time the shipment
- of the software is to be startet. But in my opinion Frank has done a
- very good job and the software seemes to be stabil since some time.
- No system crashes in the meantime appeared, no RESET neccessary in
- between.
-
-
- So watch out for the news , I'll keep you informed.

- Subject: Looking for a Radio-Modem link.
-
- I am looking for a commercially-available 4800/9600 Baud Radio-Modem
- for short range transmission. I need a RS232 interface between two
- physically separated devices, but can't run a cable. Is there anything
- I could just plug in to each end?

- Subject: TNC HELP
-
- I am using an MFJ-1274 TNC on packet with a Commodore C-128 and
- Motorola Mocom 35 radio.
- My problem is with the SIO/0 chip in the TNC. The output to the
- terminal seems to burn out and give only a 0.5/0 volt output instead
- of the usual TTL level of 5.0/0 volts. This has happened several
- times now.
- Has anyone else experienced this problem, or have any ideas as to
- what may have caused it. I'm getting tired of replacing this chip
- every few months.
- Thanks for any help or insight anyone might provide.
