- I have read Ms. Maslak's post carefully and nowhere does she blame
- anyone else for her decision. Rather, she attributed it to an aspect
- of institutional culture and noted that it was a factor in her
- decision to leave the institution. I would not be surprised if
- complaining had *not* been effective, given the tendency among
- academics to close ranks against students and outsiders, especially
- women (even today, let alone three decades ago). Certainly one's
- judgment of the potential efficacy of resistance will influence one's
- decisions in such cases, and that is a result of one's perception of
- institutional culture (among other things).
