  31. This has not been my experience with the 2.3L HSC engine (I have a FWD
  32. Topaz with ~85,000 miles).  I had to change an oxygen sensor which is
  33. a normal maintenance item on any car.  The only unusual engine thing I
  34. have had to change on it was the idle speed control motor.  You should
  35. not have problems with this kind of emissions system stuff with only
  36. 24,000 miles on it.  The Legacy is nice but the Loyale is very cramped
  37. inside when compared with the Ford.  I don't know much about the AWD
  38. version of the Ford.  One thing to beware of on Subaru is the
  39. obscenely high cost of the exhaust system, and places that have snow
  40. also tend to have salt, i.e. rust.  You could completely rebuild a
  41. Ford engine for less than the cost of a Subaru exhaust system.  This
  42. is partly because of the "unique" engine design on the Subaru, a
  43. horizontally opposed engine.  I can get a complete exhaust system for
  44. the Topaz for < $100 installed.

  46. Parts for the Tempo are cheap and easy to find because it has been one
  47. of the top 10 selling cars for many years.  For example, the transaxle
  48. which is about 3x cheaper on the Ford.  I know some people swear by
  49. Subaru but I have not been very impressed with them.  Other 4WD wagons
  50. to consider are Honda and Toyota.
