- WASHINGTON, Nov. 4 -- The largest U.S. peace organization
- today welcomed the election of Gov. Bill Clinton as
- president of the United States, saying that his message of change
- resonated with years of effort by many national organizations who
- urge redirection of resources from military spending to human
- needs.
- "With the Cold War truly over, it is time to address the
- critical needs facing the U.S. economy," said Monica Green,
- executive director of SANE/FREEZE: Campaign for Global Security.
- "Change was the theme in this year's elections. Voters have
- clearly expressed their desire for a president and Congress more
- responsive to the real threats to their security: such as
- unemployment, unaffordable health care and inadequate public school
- funding."
- Green noted that although international security issues were not
- very prominent in the campaigns, U.S. foreign and military policy
- impacts our ability to meet domestic needs.
- "President-elect Clinton projects spending $1.36 trillion on the
- military in the next five years," Green said, "but we have learned
- during the Reagan-Bush administration that this level of military
- spending is at odds with strengthening our economy."
- Green commented that SANE/FREEZE members had been instrumental
- in electing several pro-change senators, such as Carol Moseley
- Braun and Barbara Boxer.
- "The first task facing both the new president and the new
- Congress will be to prepare a federal budget for the next fiscal
- year," Green noted. "This will be the first post-Cold War budget
- not confined by the 1989 budget walls which restricted the transfer
- of funds from military to domestic purposes.
- "It is imperative that the voters' mandate for change be
- reflected in a reassessment of national priorities that puts the
- money where the campaign rhetoric has been, " Green said. "This
- means trimming the military budget to sensible post-Cold War
- levels, enacting a comprehensive plan for conversion of our economy
- to civilian production and investing in economic growth so that we
- can compete in the global market."
- SANE/FREEZE is the nation's largest grassroots peace
- organization. Its 100,000 members and 200 chapters work for
- nuclear disarmament, an end to the global arms trade and federal
- priorities emphasizing human needs over military spending.
