- The point is *WE* NEED it and unless there is a large user base, there isn't
- a reason for UNIX in the future and we lose our nice playing (uh, *WORKING*
- of course :) environment. The point is that the ugly details (talking from
- user viewpoint) need to be hidden. Just like the electronics in a video
- recorder. Users don't need to know how a transistor works, they don't need to
- know how 'ls -l' works. If I insert a tape in the video, I want it to work. If
- users put in a floppy disk, they want it to work.

- Ever heard about going backward by going forward? London had gas lights in the
- streets many years before Amsterdam. But at the time Amsterdam got street
- lights, it was electrical light and London still had gas lights. So they had
- an advantage which became a disadvantage in the future. The same happens to
- UNIX, it has several advantages over other systems like OS/2 and NT but if it
- isn't at least following the other systems, it will become a backward system.
- The big difference between OS/2, NT and UNIX, besides some techical details,
- is that OS/2 and NT are aimed at users and UNIX is still aimed at knowledgable
- people (hackers, gurus, (computer) scientists, etc.).
-
- If UNIX isn't going to battle OS/2 and NT in the user market, then it will lose
- because the user market is the largest market. And if UNIX is really that
- flexible, then it shouldn't be difficult to make it both a user's machine and
- a hacker's machine. Just hide the 'ugly' details but don't throw them away.

- I think you should sit down, relax and _think_ about the future. If you want
- an NT and/or OS/2 future, then don't do anything, just keep up the arrogance
- towards Joe and Jane User.
