- Problem: 386/40's don't consistently see 8MB of RAM
-
- Altec 386/40s originally configured with 4MB RAM were recently upgraded
- to 8MB RAM with identical SIMMS (1X9 70ns). When I've reset or
- powercycled the machines, the CMOS recognizes the additional 4MB of
- RAM only about 1 out of 15 times. I've moved the SIMMS around (e.g.
- Bank 1 SIMMS put in Bank 0), the Bank 0 SIMMS are always recognized.
- This suggests that all the SIMMS are working fine. Reseating the SIMMS
- *SOMETIMES* helps, but not often enough to be consistent.
-
- Oddity: When the CMOS finally recognizes the full 8MB, the PC
- mini-tower is placed upright, and the system is reset or powercycled,
- the additional 4MB is again lost to the CMOS.
-
- I suspect a bad dry solder joint on the connection between the
- motherboard and the memory SIMM cage. Anyone else have any other
- ideas? E-mail replies are fine.
