You are not grossly mistaken, just a little. The 8450 is not an IDE interface
drive, it is ST-506, commonly known as MFM or RLL. To be used as a 40Mb
drive it must be run on an RLL controller.
The details of the drive interface (MFM, RLL, or some other) are internal to
an IDE drive. In effect, you have taken most of the intelligence out of the
controller card and moved it to the drive, leaving a simple bus interface
left on the controller card, which is why they can be so cheap!
The original poster (Rich Waldorf) needs to find himself another RLL con-
troller to have his drive work, unless in "getting some voltage across it,"
