- An internal modem has a UART sitting directly on the ISA bus? Or do
- they not use a UART on the bus, emulate the UART handshaking, and store
- data internally as parallel bytes? Is it important to me that the
- modem have a 16550A UART to avoid data over- or under-runs when
- multitasking in Windows 3.1? Or does all the above vary from vendor to
- vendor? And it's completely irrelevant what kind of UARTs happen to be
- in the existing serial ports in the machine if I use an internal
- modem? Can an internal modem be used simultaneously with and
- independently of the other (two) serial ports?
-
- Do the current communications software packages support
- the FIFO mode of the 16550 ( in particular, ProComm+ for Windows and
- your favorite shareware package)? Is the DMA transfer mode used?
