- Suppose I have an exe program that uses the boring default icon. I'd
- like to assign a snazzy new one, which I found in a big icon archive on
- hobbes. I can't find any PM way to do this:
-
- 1) I can edit the default icon by opening the settings for the
- application in question, skipping to the general page, and clicking on
- edit next to the icon. But the icon editors tells me I'm editing some
- sort of default system icon, rather than the specific icon I want
- attached to that program. I've been afraid to mess with this for feat of
- clobbering that system .ico file.
-
- 2) I can't figure out how to import an icon into the extended attributes
- of a program (where such things are normally stored) through PM. I can't
- drop it on a program. If I follow step 1, above, I can arrange to edit
- the other icon (by calling it into the editor), but I don't see how I can
- attach it to a program.
-
- 3) I have been told that if the name of the .ico file matches the name
- of the exe and they're in the same directory, the default is to use that
- icon with that program. But I'd rather not clutter up my folders of
- executables with .ico files; this is why God created extended
- attributes.
-
- 4) Timothy's addicon.cmd does the job nicely from the command line (and
- there are times when this is what's needed, since it could operate in
- batch mode). But:
-
- a. I'd still like to be able to attach an icon without going to a
- command line, for times when that seems the most natural course (such as
- when changing other settings). Can this be done?
-
- b. When I use addicon.cmd to attach an icon, shut down, and reboot,
- and then open the settings, move to the general page, and try to edit
- that icon further, the icon editor hasn't recorded the new name and still
- thinks it is using the default system icon. As before, I've been afraid
- to edit it for fear of clobbering that default .ico file. Is this just a
- naming quirk or could I really do some damage?
-
- c. When I use addicon.cmd, shut down, and reboot, background color
- (used in the icon editor to make the icon seem to float on a background
- of any color) doesn't seem to catch immediately. I use a solid blue
- background on my desktop; when I rebooted with a newly created icon on
- the desktop that used the background color feature, the background area
- of the icon square was gray (the original OS/2 default color for the
- desktop background). After a few minutes it changed all by itself. Why?
-
- Thanks for any advice.
