- Remi,
-
- I think that if you will re-read my original note you will see that I
- specifically stated that increased use of technology WILL NOT replace the
- teacher, but will redefine the teacher's role from source to mentor. I think
- this is in agreement with your statement.
-
- In response to where have I obtained my information, I guess it comes from my
- 15 years as a practicing K-12 educator/administrator and my 5+ years as a
- school technology/reform consultant working directly with school districts
- seeking to change a system that annually dumps up to 30% of its clientel into
- the world unfit to participate as productive citizens.
-
- Technology provides education a set of powerful tools, not a single all-
- encompassing method for teaching every child everything. No doubt, there
- are those situations in which the traditional method of the teacher-as-expert
- is preferred; however, there are also many situations where many students
- can prosper best by the teacher moving beside the student and allowing the
- student to investigate knowledge directly UNDER THE TEACHER'S GUIDANCE.
-
- There was also a second posting which stated that hypertext is currently
- much more valuable to education than multimedia and/or VR. I agree 100%.
- Although local development of hypertext materials is still beyond a sizable
- number of educators, there are many who are doing very creative and
- constructive things with it....many more than who are prepared to work with
- multimedia. Very few have even heard of VR. One promising aspect of
- multimedia is its potential to initiate and support interdisciplinary
- instruction. I have a few clients beginning to try this, and they are
- experiencing some success.
-
- In conclusion, one of the problems I have with many of the discussions on
- lists such as this is that the participants, myself included, generally tend
- to speak of K-12 in global terms. There is such enormous diversity within
- K-12, and various socioeconomic, geographical and political sites that all
- anyone can do is to keep looking for the selection of tools which best fit
- the immediate situation. Development of hypermedia, multimedia, VR, etc
- is not providing more solutions, necessarily, but it is increasing the array
- of tools from which practitioners can select.
