- In response to Michael Gaffney,
-
- Thanks for the posting. As a former chemistry teacher, I built my course
- around hands-on experiences, and was at first very skeptical that someone
- would want to replace these experiences with multimedia simulations. However,
- Smith and Jones (yes, these are the real names) at the University of Illinois
- created a video disk-based freshman chemistry course which I understand is now
- used almost exclusively in place of the traditional lab course. It is my
- understanding that students using this method are more independent learners and
- generally test at a higher level of understanding of the basic concepts than
- their traditional counterparts. Spin-off benefits include the ability to
- simulate investigations that would be traditionally prohibitive due to cost
- or safety, the opportunities to gather more data by being able to re-run
- trials more efficiently, and a substantial reduction in consummable costs
- to the university.
-
- My information is somewhat dated, but perhaps an Illini will read this and
- give us more direct observations. By the way, I believe the Smith & Jones
- course is available commercially from IBM.
-
- How are things in NZ??? Warming up? It is getting colder here by the
- day. My life's goal is to visit New Zealand. I've been eating Kiwi to
- prepare myself.
