  24. I am a degree candidate in sociology at Texas A&M University writing
  25. dissertation entitled "Knowledge, Science, Technology, and Society:
  26. a Theoretical Model of Self-Organization."  Basically, I am
  27. arguing against the prevailing view of functionally differentiated
  28. system structures that each act as "externalities" for the other.
  29. I am trying to develop a hierarchical model of a self-organized
  30. system of resource tranafers that utilizes the same unit of
  31. of analysis for both ecosystems and social systems: the resource
  32. transfer group.  I borrow this concept from Lee Freese at Washington
  33. State University.

  35. In building the model, I am interested in three basic sources of
  36. hierarchical control: 1) interpersonal dominance/subordinance;
  37. 2) asymmetrical dependencies and interdependencies in "chains" of
  38. resource transfers between groups; 3) aggregate control features
  39. that may or may not be a perceptual artifact of the mathematical model.

  41. I heard about the csg-l group via an announcement in the ASA newsletter.
  42. I belong to a number of other groups, and decided to take a look.  I am
  43. interested in the ideas, but _very_ unfamiliar with the area.  I
  44. appreciate the beginner's bibliography that is posted, and am in the
  45. process of locating some of the materials contained therein.

  47. I am as yet undecided how the concept of perceptual control may fit
  48. in with my thesis.  Thus, I am primarily observing the group
  49. discussion at this point.
