- At Ferranti, Manchester, involved in construction of one of world's first
- commercial digital computers
- Returned to Cambridge to do research.
- '59 to Glasgow University computing lab (later dept comp sci)
- '68 headed Stirling Uni dept comp sci

- Developed one of the first programs to implement the Todd-Coxeter co-
- set enumeration algorithm.
- Devised the Leech Lattice (sphere packing in 24 dimensions), used to good
- effect by John Conway to produce new sporadic finite simple groups.
