- Vascar can also be spectacularly innaccurate. I served on a jury in
- Superior Court for a speeding ticket case...not your ordinary speeding ticket.
- The defendant was charged with 107 in a 55 zone. While testimony made it
- obvious that the defendant was exceeding the speed limit, it was also plainly
- obvious (by the testimony of the Highway Patrolman that made the stop) that
- there was no way she could have been doing 107 mph; his time and distance
- estimates for overtaking her were ridiculous. Add to this the killer: she
- driving a 3-4 year old Chevy diesel sedan. Those engines were governed to do
- only about 80 mph. We could easily found guilty for exceeding posted speed for
- say, 70 or 75 in a 55 zone, because it was obvious by her own testimony that
- was her probable rate of travel. HP and DA wanted 107/55, so we had to find
- her innocent (to the evil glare of the DA).
-
- VASCAR also has to be calibrated *by hand daily*...lots of room for mistakes.
-
- Besides, all of the people that I've known to use radar use it to detect a
- patrolman shooting *someone else*...it's clearly too late otherwise.
