  12. The U.S. seems to be organized in such a manner that status is inversely
  13. related with actual usefulness.  So the President has a very high salary,
  14. and mathematicians of the 'pure' persuasion don't do too badly, and
  15. neither do sports heroes; what sort of salary is the person who takes out
  16. your garbage getting?  Not bad (if unionized) but nowhere near good, i'll
  17. bet.
