  30. I had the same problem after I installed 386bsd.  It's not the permissions.
  31. The mtools in the binary distribution appear to be broken.  mread works
  32. fine, but mdir/mwrite/mattrib etc. abort with the above error message.

  34. I grabbed the binaries for mtools from the file
  35. /386BSD/nova.cc.purdue.edu/mtools-2.0.5.tar.Z on src.doc.ic.ac.uk ftp
  36. server and these work fine.

  38. As mread works, you should be able get the new mtools loaded if you don't
  39. have internet access from the 386BSD computer.

  41. The nova.cc.purdue.edu directory is not in the ROADMAP, so this 
  42. directory might not exist at all the 386BSD ftp sites, but presumably
  43. it *IS* available at nova.cc.purdue.edu!

  45. Of course, I might be wrong about the mtools in the binary distribution.
