- this is a networking / compatibility question.
-
- i have 2 nexts, 040s w/printers, and a decstation 5000/200 running ultrix v4.2a
- with NO printer together in a network.
-
- i want to make the resources of the next printers available to the dec-
- station.
-
- each machine has the names of all the other machines in the net in its
- hosts.equiv file. email works fine between all machines. printing from
- one next to another next works. however, the decstation cannot print to any
- of the nexts. there is no configuration server for the nexts in the setup.
- nfs is not being used.
-
- also relevant: 'lpr -P<name> <filename>' on the decstation places the (cf and
- df) files in the spool directory of the decstation, along with a 'lock'
- and '.seq' file. lpq -P<name> returns from machine <name> something like
- 'lpd does not have permission to print', followed by a message from the
- decstation 'no daemon present' and a list of the spooled print jobs. however,
- 'ps -ax | grep lpd' on the decstation shows a running lpd.
-
- additionally, i noted the following strangeness: rcp on the nexts to
- the decstation works without a hitch, but responds with 'permission denied'
- if it is used on the decstation to the nexts. even to directories with
- world write permission all the way up the tree! similarly, rlogin does
- not ask for the passwd when going to the decstation, but asks when coming
- from the decstation.
-
- i'm not sure if this is a permissions problem, a network problem, software,
- etc. any help the GaNG might give will be warmly appreciated!
