- I have (had) been using OS/2 2.0 for a few months now, and have some questions.
- I made very similar post to comp.os.os2.advocacy awhile back, but didn't get
- much of a response (thank you for yours, Alan Brumbaugh!). So, I'm posting it
- here in hopes of a larger turnout...
-
- Note that I don't have a copy of OS/2 here (hence the 'had'), but that I will
- try any suggestions when I can (probably Thanksgiving). But do reply anyway
- (if and when you find an answer). Email would be preferred.
-
- Questions/problems:
-
- - I accidently overwrote the original 'autoexec.bat' file on my OS/2 drive and
- can't seem to find it on the installation disks. Could someone please post
- or email a listing?
-
- - How do I set up a DOS session (window) to believe that I have dual monitors
- (i.e., link another DOS window as my second monitor). I would like to run,
- say, the Turbo Pascal IDE in one window and the output screen in the other
- window. This may be accomplished with the '/D' command-line switch.
- According to the Pascal on-line help, the program checks for appropriate
- hardware.
-
- - I have been having trouble closing DOS and OS/2 windows on the Desktop. I
- type 'exit' at the prompt, and the title bar changes to "Closing: DOS [OS/2]
- Window," but then does not close. Double-clicking on the title-bar icon
- produces the appropriate waring (losing my data in the active session, etc.),
- but clicking 'YES' has no apparent effect. (Sometimes, closing the active
- window - rather than closing a "Closing: DOS [OS/2] Window" - has the same
- effect.) Shutting down the system usually cannot be performed: the Shutdown
- warning comes up, and so does the warning for closing an open window, but the
- system does not complete shutdown and returns to the Desktop. Sometimes, the
- system will respond to neither mouse input nor keyboard input soon after.
- The 'Close on Exit' setting is enabled.
-
- - In a DOS window, I ran the file management program Treeview v1.1 (from Magee
- Enterprises, I think). I copied some files from C:\SYSTEM (drive C is FAT)
- to the newly-created C:\SYS; the files included MOUSE.SYS and XCOPY.EXE. I
- was warned that I would overwrite these two particular files (implying that
- they existed in C:\SYS). These files were not present in C:\SYS (I checked),
- so I 'overwrote' them. It turns out that the files under the same names in
- D:\OS2\MDOS were overwritten (but the files were also copied correctly to
- C:\SYS). Any ideas as to what happened?
-
- - Is it possible to set the inter-icon spacing? Is there a grid similar to
- the one on a Mac, where individual icons may be aligned with the closest grid
- intersection anywhere within a folder (and not just piled to a side or the
- top)?
-
- - In the on-line reference, there was a note about setting up the WIN-OS2
- printer to point to a port with IBMNULL in it. I'm confused about this.
- Could someone explain?
-
- - How do I access the font cartidges listed for my printer (HP LaserJet III)?
- [Open the printer object, go to the notebook page with the printer icons
- (2nd tab, I think), and open the settings for the laser printer.] There is
- a page with "Available font cartidges." Does this mean that, if I enable
- the correct cartridges, OS/2 will provide my programs with the font cartidges
- requested? Can I tell WIN-OS2 that I have these cartidges (e.g., running
- Word for Windows)?
-
- That's all I can think of for now. Thanks in advance for any help!
-
- Sincerely,
-
- Jack Tan
