- Here's a simple line-in-use indicator that I've found useful:

- Ring ____________/\/\/\__| \|_________ Tip
- (Red wire in phone line) R1 | /| (green wire in phone line)
- |/ |
- D1

- R1 - 10K ohms

- D1 - green light emitting diode (LED)

- When the line is available the LED is lit; when it is in use the
- LED is out.

- This will only work with 2 or 3 instruments on 1 line. You may
- have to reverse the connections to Tip and Ring; Telco central
- office batteries don't always have the right polarity.
