- I'm having an odd problem with my 1989 Chrysler LeBaron. I'm hoping for
- pointers either to a solution, or to a competent (probably computer-literate)
- mechanic in the South San Francisco Bay Area.
-
- The car is the GTS (hatchback) model with the 4-cylinder turbo, automatic
- transmission. The problem is that when accelerating hard, such as to merge
- onto a freeway, the car gets up to about 3500 RPM and then quits - it just
- stops accelerating. The RPMs drop to about 3000 or so, and the engine kicks
- back in like nothing happened. The effect on smoothness is unpleasant, to
- say the least... If I drop into neutral (e.g. at a stop light) and rev
- the engine, it will go up to 5-6000 RPM with no problems. Also, if I'm
- accelerating gently, I can get the RPMs well past the 'critical' point.
-
- From the drivability standpoint, this is a real nuisance, since I'll be
- driving about 3000 miles starting next weekend, a few hundred of which will
- be over 2-lane country roads, and I'd like to be able to make my passes
- quickly and decisively.
-
- Anyway, any suggestions on simple solutions (e.g. "there's an engine over-
- speed set screw..." ) are welcome, as are recommendations for a mechanic
- in my area that stands a chance of diagnosing what one friend thinks might
- be an engine-computer problem.
-
- I will be reading r.a.tech to scan for followups, but I'd prefer direct
- email. I will post a summary if one is warranted.
-
- Thanks,
-
