- I'd go a step further. Language is a basic human skill, like walking
- and running; mechanics and music less so. Every human (*) can learn a
- language, can assemble sentences and express his thoughts. Yes, some
- will do it better than others, or with greater facility, but we all can
- do it.
-
- I got up the confidence to start writing again, after several years of
- "I'm not cut out to be a writer", because of my running. Now, as a
- runner, I'm no Carl Lewis or Gelindo Bordin - I'm certainly not Olympic
- material! But I can (and have) run respectable 10Ks and marathons; if
- I wish to invest the time, I can even do those absurd 100 mile races.
- And so I call myself a runner, because I run.
-
- Eventually I realized the same rules apply to writing. I may never win
- a Nobel prize for literature, or sell millions of copies of my latest
- bestseller. But, if I invest the time, I can write well enough to be
- published, to give enjoyment, to be a Real Writer (TM). (And hey, I
- just mailed my FIRST submission since the 70s - a children's tale.
- And I KNOW it's good enough to at least have a chance! But whatever
- happens, the months I've spent working on it have given ME a lot or
- pleasure.)
-
- (*) When I say "Every human", I exclude those born with severe
- deficiencies. Yes, there are people with learning disabilities who
- cannot learn to properly manipulate language, or do so with the
- greatest of difficulties. Just as there are people who are born
- handicapped, and can't walk. But they are a small minority, and even
- they can sometimes surprise us - consider the legless people who
- complete marathons in wheelchairs...
