  25.  WHAT:   News conference at the National Press Club to kick off a
  26. national public awareness campaign and safety promotion
  27. designed to improve child passenger safety and increase
  28. vehicle safety inspections.

  30. Safety experts from Monroe Auto Equipment, the National
  31. Safety Belt Coalition, Cosco Inc. and other safety
  32. organizations will discuss the importance of these issues to
  33. prevent needless deaths and injuries of children each year.

  39.  WHY:    More than 600 children died and 53,000 were injured in
  40. vehicle crashes last year, many of which could have been
  41. prevented by the correct use of child safety restraint
  42. seats, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety
  43. Administration.

  45. In addition, findings released in July by the University of
  46. California, Irvine, suggest that many parents still believe
  47. on-lap riding is safe...a position better referred to by
  48. experts as the "Child Crusher."  Unfortunately, nothing
  49. could be further from the truth.
