- I tried out Access PC for a while, but finally ended up dumping it. I
- was running into peculiar crashes occassionally, especially when trying
- to access the floppy drives from A/UX (the CommandShell). Perhaps newer
- versions are better, but frankly I don't have the desire to find out.
-
- What I use now and strongly recommend is the "mtools" package from the
- net. It's on various archive sites, such as the linux repositories.
-
- What this package does is provide a bunch of DOS tools that access a
- floppy through the raw /dev device. There are commands such as "mdir",
- "mcopy", "mdel", "mformat", "mlabel" and so on that emulate those DOS
- commands. (These commands only work from the A/UX environment.)
-
- I've never had a problem since, and I exchange 1.4Mb PC floppies with my
- friend's laptop without any problems. True, it doesn't look as cool as
- being on the desktop, but at least I don't have any annoying text file
- conversion problems between A/UX, MacOS, and AccessPC.
-
- I can make a set of A/UX diffs available to those that want it. mtools
- is pretty easy to port.
