  13. This is my first post to this news group, and from reading it, 
  14. there seems to be a lot of expertise here.

  18. I have System 7.0 running on a IIcx, 4MB RAM, and with MODE32. I just
  19. tried to use the virtual memory feature, and had several problems. I 
  20. turned on 32 bit processing, and enabled MODE32, and increased the
  21. *total* memory to 12MB.

  23. 1) Although the memory control panel says 'total memory,' the entire
  24. 12MB seemed to be subtracted from my hard drive, ignoring the 4MB of
  25. real RAM I have.
  26.  
  27. 2) The Mac doesn't seem to release its VM on the hard drive. After I
  28. ran some memory intensive applications, I closed them all and tried
  29. to open one small application, and I got a message saying insufficient
  30. memory (and not the message saying an application prefers X amount, but
  31. only Y amount is available), and the application would not open. I
  32. checked the Finder, and it said the largest unused block was > 8MB, and
  33. this app only needed 342K!!!!

  35. 3) I couldn't seem to cut and paste. I tried cutting something from a
  36. paint program, and pasting it into the scrapbook...after several tries
  37. and 'out of memory' errors, that finally worked. Then I tried to copy
  38. the picture from the scrapbook and paste it into a PICT resource inside
  39. ResEdit, and I couldn't get it to work (the picture was about 700K). 
  40. It was like the clipboard just kept being erased.

  42. 4) VM seemed to bite into harddrive space which I didn't allocate to it.

  45. Any help would be appreciated. I don't know what System 7.0.1 fixes, but
  46. I didn't even know it was out until reading this news group. Does it patch
  47. VM?
