  22. Daniel sort of asked the question I have, but I'll turn it around slightly
  23. to make sure I truly understand the answer:

  25. I can get an Adaptec 1740 EISA SCSI controller for a price considerably
  26. better than for an Adaptec 1742 EISA SCSI controller with built-in
  27. floppy control.  I was thinking I could just get a cheap IDE/Floppy
  28. controller and disable the IDE part.  (For $14 I'm not beyond prying
  29. out chips, if necessary.)  Does anybody have a feel for whether this
  30. will work?  Specifically:

  32. 1)    Does the 1740 bios allow booting from a hard disk?
  33.     (It's hard to imagine that it wouldn't, but I'd safer to
  34.     ask before I've spent any money.)

  36. 2)    Will I lose the 1740's 32-bit performance due to
  37.     the presence of an ISA card in the system?
  38.      (I'm not sure why this would be, but I've heard rumors
  39.     that having even one ISA card in an EISA bus effectively
  40.     trashes the whole reason to have an EISA bus in the
  41.     first place.
