- Daniel sort of asked the question I have, but I'll turn it around slightly
- to make sure I truly understand the answer:
-
- I can get an Adaptec 1740 EISA SCSI controller for a price considerably
- better than for an Adaptec 1742 EISA SCSI controller with built-in
- floppy control. I was thinking I could just get a cheap IDE/Floppy
- controller and disable the IDE part. (For $14 I'm not beyond prying
- out chips, if necessary.) Does anybody have a feel for whether this
- will work? Specifically:
-
- 1) Does the 1740 bios allow booting from a hard disk?
- (It's hard to imagine that it wouldn't, but I'd safer to
- ask before I've spent any money.)
-
- 2) Will I lose the 1740's 32-bit performance due to
- the presence of an ISA card in the system?
- (I'm not sure why this would be, but I've heard rumors
- that having even one ISA card in an EISA bus effectively
- trashes the whole reason to have an EISA bus in the
- first place.
